The shooting took place in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood near Myrtle and Tompkins Ave. Both officers were rushed to Woodhull hospital. At least one of the officers was shot in the head, police said.

Authorities say the suspect shot himself inside the subway and is believed to be dead.

The shooting comes at a time when police are being heavily criticized for their tactics following the chokehold death of Eric Garner. Several officers have been assaulted at New York City protests during demonstrations that have largely been peaceful.

No other details were immediately available.

The NY Daily News identified the suspect as Ismaaiyl Brinsley and that investigators believe the gunman’s mission was to avenge Eric Garner and Michael Brown.

“I’m Putting Wings on Pigs Today,” a person believed to be the gunman wrote on Instagram in a message posted just three hours before the officers were shot through their front passenger window.

“They Take 1 Of Ours … Let’s Take 2 of Theirs,” the post continued, signing off with, “This May Be My Final Post.”

Brinsley, was a fugitive who had just murdered his girlfriend in Baltimore Saturday morning, sources told The NY Post.

This is a horrendous crime. However to make a link between him and the protestors, or yo justify police behavior due yo that, is stupid.

Yheis guy was a trouble maker, who shot his girlfriend in name of Eric garner too.

Did anyone else notice that the protests have been, and continue to be labeled – in virtually every single article related to the subject – as “largely peaceful”. Makes one wonder what these thugs would have to do to finally not be described as peaceful.

They shldnd put any more officers on these lowlife areas. Let’s see what’s gonna happen. It will be like a third world war. These animals don’t know anything better. Violence is their only language they speak these bums. Now let’s hear what the murderer sharpton has to say.

All law abiding citizens should demand the Mayor to RESIGN. He is an embarrassment to the City.

The suspect’s first name is Ismaaiyl, how ironic. My condolences to these two heroes families.

so sad, yet not a surprise. that’s what happens when elected officials stick up for the criminals instead of their own police force.

Please all you city people hated Bloomberg…i knew you all would be crying when another incompetent Democrat got in. No democrat can run this city, only a tough republican. Its the nature of the city and its dynamics which only a sharp tough republican can work with.

I am not a racist and I think there are a lot of very fine people out there in any race or color, but, unfortunately some people make it bad for their race by reacting with uncalled for riots and violence when they perceive things to be unfair, and they cause much more destruction and bias that way. It could be the police were wrong in the Garner case. If it was truly a choke hold and they caused Garner to die, but the rioting and the protests and subsequent murders do not make it right. It just escalates the tension and shows that certain people just have brutal inhuman natures.

How about everyone call their local precinct and convey your condolences to them. I know they appreciate the calls. I just did. I also told him how proud I was of the officers who turned their backs on our “illustrious” mayor. NYC has turned upside down since he became mayor. I absolutely feel less safe now. I say bring back the stop and frisk. It worked!!! I also say the mayor should either resign or be impeached, whichever comes faster.
