How the UK Air Quality Has Changed Since Isolation

0

The lockdown prompted by the coronavirus has changed the world in a big way. One of the major changes that have come about is air quality in the UK. Air pollution has been a common phenomenon in many UK cities over the years. However, this trend has changed since isolation. According to the National Centre for Atmospheric Science, there has been a significant reduction of nitrogen dioxide in the UK, which is a major air pollutant. Further reports by the Evening Standard show that by 19th March, 2020, air pollution had decreased by more than a third in London. Nowloan Uk Have provided a detailed explanation of how air quality has changed since isolation.

People Are Staying At Home

The rules aimed at preventing the spread of the coronavirus mean that people have to stay at home. UK cities like London are usually very busy with people doing different things. It is some of these activities that people engage in that contribute to massive air pollution. But, with people being forced to stay in isolation, air quality in the UK has improved significantly. The rate of pollution has gone down because the often busy UK cities are not crowded as they usually are. If the isolation continues for a longer time, the rate of pollution will keep on decreasing.

Motorists Are Staying Off Roads

Vehicle emissions are one of the factors that cause air pollution in the UK and around the globe at large. Since the isolation rules started to take effect, motorists are no longer a threat to air quality. Given that people have to stay at home and many activities have been put on hold, motorists are staying off roads. This is, indeed, one of the reasons as to why air quality in the UK has changed. Statistics by the Department of the Environment Food and Rural Affairs show a reduction in the quantity of nitrogen dioxide. In fact, the report reveals that air pollution was lower on Monday than on Sundays, which was not the case previously. Normally, Mondays are very busy but with motorists not hitting the roads, the situation has been changing.

Pollution from Factories Has Reduced

Manufacturing industries are also one of the leading causes of air pollution. The lockdown and isolation policies by government authorities have affected factory processes in a big way. Companies are not operating as they used to. Workers are staying at home, thus making it difficult for manufacturing industries to operate as they used to. Moreover, manufacturing resources are not as abundant as they were before the coronavirus; hence, reducing the quantity of factory processes. The effect of this is a fall in the quantity of air pollution and, in turn, improving air quality in the UK.

Certainly, the situation around the globe has changed the way governments, companies, and people used to operate. Things have shifted in a big way. Nevertheless, one positive thing that has come from this season of isolation is the improvement in air quality in UK’s cities. Air pollution has been a major global problem for a long time now. We can only wait and see how things will be in the coming months.
