NEW YORK (AP) — Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Friday that New York schools and colleges will remain closed through the rest of the academic year amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Cuomo said that it’s too risky to open up schools again this spring, and that he wants to keep children and educators safe.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story is below:

New York’s horrible April — among the worst in its history — is over. Only time will tell if the coronavirus pandemic that made it so awful will fade in May.

“We’ve got a lot way to go but May I think is going to be a decisive month and a chance for us to do something great in this city,” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said Friday.

When April began, the virus was already raging. Nearly 2,000 people were dead. Gov. Andrew Cuomo warned that one model predicted as many as 16,000 deaths once the outbreak was over.

At the time, that seemed grim. Reality has been worse.

Though Wednesday, the virus was believed to have killed at least 23,600 people in the state, including around 5,300 people who died before their infection could be confirmed by a lab test.

That’s nearly nine times the number of people who died in the Sept. 11 attacks. Most experts agree the figure is an undercount, since it only includes deaths where the link to COVID-19 was certain enough to be included on a death certificate.

May begins where March ended, but with more hopeful news that the worst is over. The state’s daily fatality count, which peaked with 799 deaths on April 8, has declined to roughly where it was at the close of March, with 306 people deaths Wednesday.

The number of people hospitalized with the virus has slid to approximately where it was one month ago, too, after hitting a peak in mid April.

On Wednesday a navy hospital ship that had steamed to New York City to assist with the pandemic departed. A temporary hospital, set up in Manhattan’s main convention center, is close to closing, too, as the city’s hospitals have proven able to handle the load of patients.

But while other parts of the nation have started to lift restrictions on social interaction, New York City is still ratcheting down. On Thursday, Cuomo announced that the city’s subway system would curtail overnight service to make it easier to disinfect trains, amid fresh fears that bringing people together on public transit helps the virus spread.

COLORADO PARAMEDIC MOURNED

De Blasio said New York City will find a way to honor Colorado paramedic Paul Cary, who died of COVID-19 after traveling to New York to help battle the pandemic.

““I gotta tell you it just hurts that such a good man has made the ultimate sacrifice for us,” de Blasio said.

Cary, 66, was part of a wave of paramedics and emergency medical technicians from around the country who pitched in to help New York when the coronavirus was surging. His death was announced Thursday. De Blasio said Cary “gave his life for us and we’re going to honor him in a particular way.”

ii realize that it is very rough on parents and on kids being home, and cooped up for the last seven weeks; however, the alternative is to invite disaster. When Japan opened up some schools, there was an increase in Covid-19 cases. We can’t afford to take that chance. It is better to be bored and climb the walls for another eight weeks, that to risk coming down with a horrible disease; hence, Cuomo was right on this policy.

Cuomo. And his sidekick Lousio are going to keep the economy shuttered so that they can defeat Trump and convert the USA to socialism. They must be defeated at the next election. Never forget bail reform that has.led to lawlessness.

things are fluid , the teachers union is the one screaming dont open they are very powerful , also although yidden can open on 48hrs notice the ps system needs weeks
there is a decent chance of the gov. allowing private schools to quasi open with 50% capacity of children on june 1
the incentive for the governor is that we can be the experiment to see what happens”
the 50% would work as a-l on sun, tue, thu & m-z the other days

So basically Shevuos bites the dust. Yet another Yom Tov davening in the living room. How inspiring. No Shul no Rav no yud gimmel midos no duchening no bracha no migilas Rus no krias hatorah. Only negativity and threats from all the so-called askanim, mosrim, and medical “experts” sadists. We are mamesh like the goyim. How are we different? Very depressing situation. No end in sight. It’s like a slave master telling his slave, start digging. The slave says, when should I stop? The master says, you just keep digging until I tell you to. That’s the worst kind of torture possible. That’s what we have right now.

“Worst kind of torture that’s what” “YOU” have right now”. I am davening much better than ever did. Did not have to take my little kids to shul and babysit them. Did not have to listen to Loshen Hore. Did not have to be cold or hot I set the temperature myself in the Dining room. Did not have to Drink and eat Junk Food on the Kidishem instead I ate the a healthy delicious food my wife/daughter prepared, did not have to listen to boring politics of Trump this or that some think he is G-d best ever for Jews, some say he is the worst ever, Did not have to watch people shakling like a lulev and screaming or dont even open a sidur. Did not have to listen to Misheberachs and some boring announcements. It was only Hashem present. Finally I realised why many Tzadikim davened without a minyan. Finally a truly understand the POSUK in Tayreh. Bechol Mokaym asher ato azkir es smi ovay elecho uberachticho. Anyplace you daven I will come and bless you.

Probably reopening schools is a good first step. Children are less likely to die of this disease. Further, many young families count of school as a sort of daycare so mom and dad can work. Schooling is important. We need to reopen schools first.
