Op-Ed: New York To Observant Jews: Drop Dead And Pay Us Taxes

130
Hundreds of mourners gather in the Brooklyn borough of New York, Tuesday, April 28, 2020, to observe a funeral for Rabbi Chaim Mertz, a Hasidic Orthodox leader whose death was reportedly tied to the coronavirus. The stress of the coronavirus' toll on New York City's Orthodox Jews was brought to the fore on Wednesday after Mayor Bill de Blasio chastised "the Jewish community" following the breakup of the large funeral that flouted public health orders.(Peter Gerber via AP)

NEW YORK (VINnews/Yosef Chaim Brook) — The observant Jewish community is no longer welcome in New York. Our way of life is being trampled upon, our needs are dismissed with ease, our vote is irrelevant and cannot change a thing.

We are being mocked, humiliated, and relegated to third-class status with shockingly cocky dismissiveness by politicians who are often invited to our Synagogues and claim to be sworn friends of the Jewish people.

I’m only 40, born, and bred in Brooklyn, and I can still remember feeling like New York was, for all practical purposes, a Jewish city.

After all, our community makes up a substantial portion of the city’s population. We are politically connected, with friends in high places who can get whatever is needed – “done.”

We are responsible for so much of New York’s economy, and make up an important part of its tax base. We believed we had the respect and consideration of city and state government, since they understand and appreciate our contribution to the city and state.

That’s what most of us thought.

Then came Corona and everything about New York we believed to be true, turned out to be false.

We learned that not only do we not have any say in New York but in fact we don’t even have equal status to other residents. As a matter of fact, we have no status, unless you consider taxation without representation a status.

You see, in the name of public health New York officials told us that:

Our synagogues must be completely shuttered until such time that the “Public Health Experts” decide they can reopen, which could be at any time or at no time. This was strictly enforced by NYPD who were very scrupulous at kicking people out of synagogues if, G-D forbid, they found one in operation.

We were not allowed to pay final respects to our beloved parents and grandparents who passed away. We were told we couldn’t hold any funerals. If you dared try and hold a funeral even if it was outside, even with the most extreme social distancing you had police cars follow you around shouting at you to disperse.

We were told we cannot visit our parents or grandparents in the hospital. We now know that this meant leaving many of them to die at the hands of overworked, burned-out,  or overwhelmed nursing staff.

We were told our small and medium-sized businesses needed to remain shuttered until the time that the “Public Health Experts” decide they can reopen, which could be at any time or at no time; While big box stores were allowed to remain open. As of this writing, THEY ARE STILL CLOSED. If any of us dared to roll up the gate of their store more than a few inches, we are handed a fine to the tune of thousands of dollars to make up for all the lost revenue the city has endured due to lack of parking tickets.

As law abiding, tax-paying, responsible citizens of this city and state, we sat through all of this quietly.

In our hearts, we knew it was wrong, at least some of it. We knew it was a gross overreaction. We knew these draconian limitations on life were extended well beyond what was necessary and supported by science. But we also understood that our city and state are run by Progressive Democrats and that comes with a price, so we sucked it up and remained quiet.

But then came the George Floyd protests.

All of a sudden:

  • Public Health was out the window.
  • Social Distancing, nonexistent.
  • Only small crowds under ten people, non-applicable.
  • Stores must remain closed, unless you are looting, in which case stores are wide open.

To add insult to injury the very same Public Health Officials who made up all of those rules, and the city and state officials who made sure they were strictly enforced against our communities and businesses, had an overnight change of heart and seemingly a change in the science, the facts and the data.

What was disallowed for the Jews. i.e. communal prayer and funerals for starters, was perfectly fine and encouraged for George Floyd protests.

One NYC Public health official even went as far as saying that should there be an increase in Covid infections after the protests it can only be blamed on racism and not on the lack of social distancing exhibited by protesters.

I must have missed it when the same official said that should there be a COVID outbreak as a result of large crowds at a Hasidic funeral it can only be blamed on anti-semitism.

You see, when it came to the Jews, the Mayor had harsh words: “My message to the Jewish community and all communities ( I wonder who he meant by “all communities” because we never merited to see enforcement of this kind against ALL communities, but I digress) is this simple:

“The time for warnings has passed.”

Ooh! What a tough guy this mayor is, against Hassidic Jews at a funeral!  Again, I must have just missed it when he stated, “The time for warnings has passed,” to the looters.

Then, just to twist the dagger a little more, we all saw the images of nurses dressed up in their PPE’s walking out of a Manhattan hospital entrance to clap for the protesters and support them.

You remember those sweet nurses featured in ads telling us to stay home so that they may stay alive? You remember those sweet nurses that told us we can’t sit at the hospital bedside with our parents because of the public health risk? (only to later learn that untold numbers of our greatest generation were literally left for dead under the care of the sweet nurses of New York, but I digress again).

Anyhow, THOSE nurses were now cheering the largest “dis” ever given to public health guidelines while dressed in full gear.

When an Orthodox journalist confronted the Mayor on his hypocrisy and double standard when examining his treatment of the Jewish community, its sensibilities and needs, vs the George Floyd protesters, he went on a rant explaining to the reporter that 400 years of slavery simply overrule any and all other considerations, Science, Public Health, facts, data, equality under the law, first amendment rights be damned. But if those damn Jews put a Minyan or funeral together all hell will break loose. “The time for warnings has passed.”

As a side note last week, long after the George Floyd protests were in full swing, those rebellious Jews in Williamsburg had more than ten children at once at a public playground. They forgot their George Floyd protest signs at home, so guess what happened, I won’t keep you in suspense; yep, NYPD cleared them out.

As looters were looting and destroying store after store in New York City with no one there to stop them, it became clear why there were no cops available for that task. You see, they were too busy handing out fines to Jewish store owners in Brooklyn who were guilty of the crime of trying to conduct business to feed their families and serve their customers. Who wants to fight off looters and protesters when you can hand out fines to docile Jewish Business owners?

Then came the latest decree from Emperor Cuomo: “Thou shalt not have any sleep-away camps this year. Why not? because I said so.”

“But you allowed George Floyd protests with tens of thousands of people to do what they pleased!” Sorry, the answer is no – because we just don’t know. Maybe burn a few buildings and we’ll talk then.

So now after three and a half miserable months, locked in our homes in the most miserable city on earth, our kid’s summer plans for the next two months get trashed as well.

So how does it feel to be a proud New Yorker today?

How good does will feel to don those dumb baseball caps that say I love NY when we go on vacation next time?

This city and state are the heart of Jewish life in America right?

You know the city Jesse Jackson “lovingly” called Haimytown.

We are supposedly smart people so let’s pause and think for a moment.

What exactly do we get out of living here?

We have to fund our own Ambulances and first responders because city ambulances arrive long after the pronunciation of death.

We have to fund our own community security organizations because NYPD is simply not enough to keep our communities safe.

We have to self-fund all of our schools because religious Jews have no right to expect that their children’s education is paid for like any other resident in the city.

If we live in certain neighborhoods we have a big fat target on our backs and need to be ready for a random physical attack at any moment of the day or night.

We drive on pothole riddled streets at 1 mile an hour and getting slower with each passing year.

For all these and many more delightful amenities we are also privileged with paying some of the highest taxes in the country.

For people that are supposedly smart this all seems very very dumb.

Oh I forgot there is one thing we do get and I would be remiss if I didn’t mention it. We get an extra Garbage pickup in our neighborhoods on Erev Pesach so I don’t want to come off as being ungrateful for not mentioning something so important. Come on, that’s got to be worth a few billion dollars in taxes, no?

This city is a dump. They call it “The Big Apple”, The City That Never Sleeps. It ought to be called the big pothole or the city whose rats never sleep.

Why do we still live here? why are we proud New Yorkers we shouldn’t live here and we have nothing to be proud of.

We’ve all heard the word defund thrown around lately which got me thinking.

#DefundNY has a good ring to it.

Let’s pack ourselves and our businesses up and Jexit NY as soon as possible. We can move any place in America where entrepreneurs are appreciated and religious freedom is celebrated.

I don’t know maybe some exotic place like Florida or Texas. Let’s domicile our businesses and residences in those states and bring all our tax revenues along.

For some reason our vote at the ballot box will always gets diluted by other communities so we ave zero impact when voting at the city and state level. But the one that can be impact-full is voting with our feet. Let’s get the hell out of here. and pay taxes elsewhere. Let’s help match New York’s Budgetary deficit to New York’s Streets, holes everywhere.

Even if we won’t receive any appreciation or notice in our new adopted states at least we won’t be trampled on as we currently are in the big rotten apple.

As you slam the door behind you on the way out I have just one favor to ask. Can we all please register our kids to public school for the upcoming school year. Wouldn’t it be cool to watch the city and State of NY figure out where to educate 100 thousand children overnight?

Maybe NY can raise some funds for this new unexpected expense from George Floyd protesters since they are the only ones allowed to conduct business in this city these days..

I’m feeling a slogan that goes something like “no schooling no peace” as we board jet blue to FLL or MCO, thoughts?

Very well written, and I agree 100% with almost everything he wrote about (except the hard language he too often uses). I travel a lot throughout the US and there some very nice communities that’s pretty well established already, for some reason we can’t as a group get together and move to those places, like Phoenix AZ. Or Texas, West Virginia etc. those places are calm and the climate is much nicer then NY. I guess talk is easy but to actually pick ourselves up and relocate is a very hard sell.

Hope one day it will happen, I am in for Scottsdale AZ

“Exotic place like Florida” FYI In florida there is a town called Miami Beach with 3 Kollels and 12 Shuls within 2 blocks. North Miami Beach is today one of the largest Orthodox community in the USA.

Things would be alot different if Shelly Silver was still in power. This was a city for Jews because one of the most powerful men in the state was an Orthodox Jew.
For those of you who might decide to belittle him for some of his decisions or speak lashon harsh about him, if you speak to any real leader in the frum world they will tell you about all of the amazing things he did for frum Jews in New York behind the scenes.
We need a leader like him once again. But as always we can only rely on HKBH.

One HUGE Problem. We all know that a large % of us don’t work or pay taxes at all. Just walk down on Lee Ave, 14 th Ave or Ave J on broad daylight and will see 1000’s able bodied men on the Streets. (Many Many more in Shuls, Mikves, Kollels etc) In Texas and Florida there is no Income tax at all. ZERO. 90% of the Godddies we get in NYC are not available there. Kollels are paying 60.000 – 70.000 for a Yunger Man. For a few Ashirim and Professionals it will make sense to move out, for the waste majority of Heimishe it will not work at all. The only way unsere will move out from NYC if they STOP Section 8. and everyone will have to pay Market Rent. (NYC avg 2500-3000) They will be forced to move. The fact is even when we move it will be to other Liberal Democrtic Places just like we doing in the past 10-20 years, Jersey City, Kiryas Yoel, Waterbury Ct., Monsey,NJ, Lakewood NJ. etc. In fact not a single community was started in a Republican State. Read the Platform of the Democrats and the Republicans and you will understand.

Without reading the whole Op-Ed here is my take:
We are in Golus, period. No matter how comfortable we fill here we are still in Golus.

There are some non-Jews who like us.

But many or most of them hate us. They hate us more lately thanks to Moster and his Yafed group who paint Orthodox Jews as being the lowest of humanity.

During the Coronavirus we saw a bunch of frum Jews informing on the community about Minyonim. This brought loads of antisemitism.

All is left to pray to Hashem to bring Moshicah and then only then we will go up to the holy land Eretz Yisroel.

Here is an idea. STOP VOTING FOR DEMOCRATS! If they knew they would lose a block of hundreds of thousands of votes across the city and state they might act differently. But as long as they can buy the Orthodox vote in exchange for some free programs they can trample all over our rights. Our community has no one to blame but ourselves if we keep voting for this party. At a certain point, morals and policies need to be prioritized over free stuff.

Sorry but this article is so exaggerated. Why is it that some Jews in Brooklyn think that A) this is only an attack on them and not other religious groups? B) it’s an attack on all Jews in NY (many Jewish communities in NY haven’t been targeted at all)

I also want to say that over the past few months,
-No religious centers were allowed to be open
-Funerals weren’t allowed for any group of people
– All sleepaway camps are closed, not just Jewish camps
– Not just Jewish schools were shut down
– Not just Jews were told that they couldn’t visit their loved ones in the hospital
– Not just Jewish businesses were closed
-shuls have been open well before the George Floyd protests if they met guidelines, many shuls didn’t care and broke many rules which are designed to be cautious and careful
-When Bill De Blasio went to the funeral, guidelines were stricter at the time. He did discuss his misuse of words and indirectly apologize. What he said was wrong, and that you have a claim against.
– The anti-racism and police brutality protests is very important and many members of Jewish community have shown support for these protests. government officials did ask for these people to wear masks and keep a distance while protesting.
– Most states don’t give any money towards Jewish schools because in America we have a principle called “separation between church and state”. There are government subsidies and grants towards certain areas but no one should ever expect the government to pay for our full tuition. The government doesn’t give much money to other religious schools I don’t know why we deserve more…
Why is it that’s so many people stopped wearing masks all of a sudden? There’s still risk of there being a new spike in cases. If you want to disagree feel free but you’re taking a risk.
New York State and New York city’s government have been pretty clear that people should wear masks and keep a social distance. Yes many protesters have not been doing that. But why does that make Jewish people exempt. Don’t we want to be safe? And if they go after us for breaking these rules then why do we have to cry anti-Semitism? Just wear a mask and be careful.
I think that sometimes anti-Semitism is just a part of our imagination and how we perceive things…

We pay the highest taxes in the nation. ( At least most of us do) Astronomically high Property Taxes. Sales Taxes. One of the highest State income taxes. One of the highest City income taxes. Parking Taxes. MTA Taxes. Tolls Taxes. Highest Cigarette Taxes in the nation.

What do we get in return from our local and State Government? Abuse….. Yes, daily abuse by the bucket – instead of a Thank You.

Not to mention the highest cost of living in the USA. The highest utility and water rates and the filthiest conditions

Having left my birthplace to go to any other place some 50 years ago, I concede the point that you are making. You now understand that you don’t belong in “heilige Brooklyn”.
The truth is that you now feel , a little bit, that golus is a real factor in our lives.
I moved to a Makom Torah v’yiras shomayim.
I am not going to tell you which city. Past experiences with expats showed a pattern of behavior that wasn’t compatible with life out of NYC. We have great respect for our Rabbonim . We live with our non-Jewish neighbors and coworkers. They treat us with respect as we do them. We strongly refrain from fighting or talking in shul. We don’t try to) one-up each other.
We are also not perfect but we work very hard to help each other.
Many chevraman came here and died of boredom and left. They couldn’t hack the lifestyle. Pushy people don’t know how to survive in this environment.
Rabbi Wallerstein made an arguement for moving to Eretz Yisroel. Until Eliyahu gives us a signal, we are not going to leave the golus that we’re in.
Do what’s best for your family. When we left Egypt, when we left Spain, when we left Europe, we left behind a lot of money and memories. Golus does that.
Just when you thought you were rooted, you get uprooted and have to replant in a different place than what you were used to. Hatzlocha rabbah.

Don’t bring your Covid here. We wear masks and don’t hold illegal minyanim. We aren’t willing to kill other people for our selfish need to be seen in shul. If you live minyan so much why do you talk so much in davening? New Yorkers are the biggest chatty cathys.

I watch TV I read books.

Tucker Carlson on FOX NEWS said it best. America is experiencing a revolution.

WE know that revolutions never work out well for Jews. Its sad and maddening that the America we know is dissolving right before our eyes. Corona along with the current unrest is making us Jews poorer and more vulnerable. Thousands of our elderly were murdered yes murdered by the inept governance of NYC and NYS.

The average Jew today in NYS is without real work and without real money. He is not liquid. Any assets he may have are tied into real estate which is worthless once Jews leave an area. His business in general has been shuttered or has had experienced great economic upheaval over the past three months.

He is dependent on government and as government is moving to a BLM agenda, Jews will be left out of the equation.

We must leave while we can. BLM and their followers are not our friends. They do not wish us well.

We must leave while we can. Our so called leaders are no where to be found. Our Rabbis cant see the forest for the trees.

We are in trouble.

They allow as many parks and playgrounds that any wants , to be built and maintained and nobody will ever be chased out of them for any reason . there are no curfew laws ever . I agree that you should come home. Where else in the world was the main concern with Covid not to harm Saba and Savta??? Special directives are given to take care of the elderly and to pay our respects in a safe way. Outdoor minyanim take place in a safe manner and it never bothers the neighbors because we are at home. Great efforts were made to open up shuls and minyanim safely because that is a priority in Israel. We may have differences of opinions, but here we are all brothers and sisters. It is too bad that Jews don’t learn from the long history of anti-semitism and see the writing on the wall!

I seem to remember that there was a community in upstate Iowa where things did not turn out too well.

New York City understands that the current situation where each uneducated and ignorant welfare claiming generation of Hareidim breeds a much larger uneducated and ignorant welfare claiming generation is an unsustainable burden. Education is an excellent investment with a good return if it leads to people not ending up on future welfare roles. If you ask NYC to take over education, they would find the money and do so (and they would be required by law to do so)

Dearest Yosef Chaim, quit the crocodile tears!

Our community voted for DeBlasio and Cuomo because of their handouts. If DeBlasio ran for Mayor of NYC tomorrow, with a giant sickle and hammer tattooed on his chest, while simultaneously shutting down every Shul in Boro Park, we would vote for him and his social welfare before considering any republican candidate.

The tragedy is that DeBlasio and Cuomo know that; and so does every other politicians. We vote with our wallets, not our principals.

We have brought all of the mockery and humiliation upon ourselves. And the politicians are being dismissive because they know that they can be.

You are correct that our community comprises a substantial share of New York’s population, and that we are a significant portion of New York’s tax base.

But you are awfully naïve if you think that we have, or ever had, the respect or consideration of any of these NY politicians.

What we had was a deal. We vote for them and they provide funding for our community. We kept our part of the deal and they kept theirs.

Do you really believe that the ambulance response time will be better in another city or state?
Do you really believe that we will be safer and not need Shomrim elsewhere?
Do you think another city or state will build state of the art schools and fund the education of 100,000 children who refuse to attend the public schools?

In every other Jewish community in the USA they are emulating the NYC model. Opening their own Hatzolo, Shomrim, Yeshivos and Bais Yaakov’s.

Moving to another city or state will not change anything. Voting will.

There are politicians out there who actually care for the well-being of our community and with whom we share similar principals and beliefs. If you want to see them in office, vote for them!

Golus life has a very short shelf life. Its not there forever. It usually doesnt end well for us Jews.

We have a land. Its not perfect but with more Jews there we have a chance.

The America we know is changing very quickly and not for the good.

We got to leave if only to save our lives. How you look, what you say and what you think will determine if you eat.

In 1932 my late mothers first cousins left for Eretz Yisroel from Poland.

There was no medina at the time. The British dogs were in charge. They came to Israel. There was no welfare. No one paid them to sit in yeshiva. There was nothing. They went to work. They worked in fields. They built a nation. The Parents and family they left behind in Poland were taken to Treblinka, where they were murdered by the German Nazis and their polish friends. Point being life as they knew it in Poland for hundreds of years came to a crashing end. 3 Million Jews the majority, frum yidden were destroyed.

America is done. Its over. The writing is on the wall. No political party will save us. No one will be there for us. Its time to get out of dodge.

Golus life is where Hashem sent us almost two thousand years ago.
In Golus we must stay till Moshicah comes.

Having a Jewish state before the coming of Moshicah is against the will of Hashem.

Torah observant Jews are not communist socialists Kibutzniks who work fields.
