Nation’s COVID Czar: Jewish Community Must Understand Its COVID Response Affects Others

WASHINGTON (VINnews/Sandy Eller)- The nation’s coronavirus czar expressed her support for Governor Andrew Cuomo’s newest round of restrictions that have sparked waves of outrage in the Orthodox Jewish community, advising area residents to think outside the shtetl.

“We are in a community together,” said Dr. Deborah Birx, talking to reporters at a roundtable conference held Wednesday at Long Island’s Stony Brook University. “No one group lives in isolation.”

Birx’s remarks came in response to last night’s protests in Borough Park, reported the New York Post (https://bit.ly/3d6daGM) and a clear directive to consider how a lack of social distancing might affect other people.

“I think that community needs to understand they’re within the United States, in a community of others and it’s our job to protect one another by doing what we need to do to ensure others stay safe and to ensure we don’t spread the virus to others,” said Birx.

State governors and mayors have the full support of the White House when it comes to making decisions that affect area residents, explained Birx, noting that local officials are best suited to understanding the needs of their constituents. A longtime health official with decades of experience in preventing the spread of HIV, Birx acknowledged that social distancing is difficult but crucial.

“I know that’s hard, [and] it’s particularly hard in social gatherings when we come together, but if you have your mask off and you are indoors, there could be virus spreading and so really figuring out how you [are] physically distant and ensure people are safe,” said Birx.

Birx reported that the latest spike appears to be driven by family parties and communal gatherings but does not appear to be as vicious as the first surge of the pandemic. According to the New York Post (https://bit.ly/2GLM1wZ), Birx said that shutting down places of work will not stop the pandemic and that having people limiting themselves to tight social circles is the key to curbing the current COVID wave.

What is wrong with us??? Why must we be told, in public, what should be quite obvious – we live in golus amongst other people??? If anyone doesn’t like it, then either pack your bags and move to a more accommodating state or country, or bide your time and try to vote in politicians that agree with you, or just get with the program.
What we should NOT do: whatever we decide is right for us while completely disregarding the rules in place.

Never saw them at actual riots, destruction and looting in the city. Also never saw the FDNY respond to Burning NYPD vehicles.

I mask whenever I am outside of my home. nevertheless, there appears to be a double standard and not one of these statements were made when it was BLM people. that was true indoors, outdoors and with a lot of yelling which spews more viral particles.

Sure most people wear masks at Trump rallies, BLM protests, etc…No they are not. Except for the people of NY, most of the non-JEws, including during rallies and protests are not wearing masks. They are singleing us out. Hashem is waking us up to the fact that we are in golus.

Now black people, on the other hand, do live in isolation. Ms. Brix would NEVER criticize the BLM thugs. Noooo. It’s only those pesky Jews. If there was only some way we could rid ourselves of them. Hmmm, where have I heard such sentiments before?

Dr. Birx must have forgotten that the president is back at the White House. The president tweeted against the Governor Mayor of NY today, specifically about these restrictions. So apparently they don’t have full backing from the White House.
Dr. Birx should also explain how the numbers went up on Yom tov specifically on these communities, when almost no frum person tested those days….

I can’t see making it any clearer than that! You have to be living on the moon not to understand that. Then again maybe Boro Park is the moon!

We are an “Am Kishey Ohref”. The more modern Yidden are rational and good citizens. The Charedim are basically stupid wild people, who don’t care about others. I am ashamed to be in their midst

So yes I obviously disagree but can we now all agree that this wave is less severe and less vicious ? You asked for experts now you heard it .
Notice no mention of kids spreading it either . Only large gatherings and celebrations.
