NEW YORK (VINnews) — President Trump controversially claimed victory in the US elections during the course of the night despite the fact that a number of swing states where he is currently leading are still in doubt and millions of votes have yet to be counted.

Trump also threatened to take legal action to stop the counting of votes, even though many states are continuing to process legitimate mail-in ballots. He said that it is a “fraud on the American public” and an “embarrassment to our country” that he could not yet celebrate a win.

Initially, Trump stopped short of declaring a win, instead focusing on individual states where he’s done well, but even in these states he seemed to overstate his success, prompting major news networks to cut off his speech and interject their own remarks.

Savannah Guthrie of NBC said that “We’ve got to dip in here because there have been several statements that are just frankly not true,” Guthrie told NBC viewers.Brian Williams, another NBC anchor added that  “We are reluctant to step in, but duty bound to point out when he says we did win this election, we’ve already won, that’s not based on the facts at all.”

Even before Trump spoke, news outlets cautioned that no victory claim could be made at the current time. CBS’s Norah O’Donnell stressed that “We at CBS News are not projecting in this presidential race. We will not disenfranchise the millions of voters in those battleground states and the hundreds of thousands in Georgia who also have not had their votes counted.”

The situation in a number of swing states remains fluid. Biden is leading in Nevada and Wisconsin by razor-thin margins of 7,000-8,000 votes, while Trump is currently leading in Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia. If Trump eventually wins all 4 states he will have won the elections but there are still millions of votes to be counted, especially in Pennsylvania where mail ballots have yet to be counted. Many of these are mail ballots which have favored Biden and therefore the race is far from over.

And this is why there shouldn’t be ballot counting past night of election or the next morning. Gives democrats opportunity to manufacture “missing” ballots. Almost 100 million voted early this year. The Election Day work-load should have been much lighter. There was no need to stop counting votes last night. The democrats pushed hard to extend this and now they’ve got it.
