The man, Yosef Fleischman, a well known resident of the neighborhood, was arrested in the middle of the night by police who arrived at his house and took him for questioning while barefoot in the police station. After police realized that it was a case of mistaken identity, Fleischman was released- still barefoot – but was not taken home. After a few hours he was declared missing and only after more than 12 hours he was discovered suffering from severe hypothermia and was taken to hospital. Doctors said that if he had stayed a few more hours in the forest he would have died.

Kikar Hashabat reported that police did not present a court summons as required and refused to allow Fleischman to wear shoes, telling him to “come as he is.” The mistaken ID was described by police as a “malfunction of the ID system” and the disappearance was originally explained by police as being due to Fleischman “hiding because he knew he was wanted for criminal investigation.”

Fleischman was found in a field in southern Jerusalem by United Hatzalah and Zaka volunteers searching for him. He was suffering from hypothermia and fatigue and could not communicate with those around him. He was taken in moderate condition to hospital.

Enraged Chareidi Knesset members and local leaders demanded an immediate investigation of the incident by police and stressed that such insensitivity towards a mentally challenged citizen is unacceptable for those purporting to maintain public order.

MK Moshe Arbel (Shas) sent a sharp letter to police describing how police “released Fleischman to his home without providing him even with socks and shoes and without checking whether he was capable of returning home. Fleischman, a mentally challenged older Chareidi person, was seen remonstrating with police about his difficulty to walk in his state.”

Arbel added that “although the mistaken ID could be explained somehow, the behavior of police towards Fleischman, harsh and brutal behavior which could have cost him his life cannot be explained in any manner and is totally unacceptable. Dragging an elderly sick man from his house on a freezing wintry night without giving him the time to wear shoes and then releasing him onto the street barefoot without verifying that he undestood where he is, why he was taken and how he could return to his home is wanton neglect which requires a serious investigation and criminal charges against those responsible.”

Local residents describe Fleischman as a “person who couldn’t harm a fly” and as incapable of harming others and stressed that he could not have committed any crime.

There better be some suspensions within the department as a result. And I hope the family bring a successful lawsuit, this is disgusting and unacceptable.

Should we be this surprised by the brutal, inept, and incompetent Israeli police? They show particular brutality and viciousness towards Hareidim, Arabs and Ethiopians. Several months ago, they shot dead an autistic Arab man, who was not breaking any laws, and was on his way to school in Jerusalem. To this date, the trigger happy cops still have not been punished. Prior to that, an Arab accountant, who was well dressed, and was on his way for a job interview, was roughed up, and tased by a female border officer. Again, the guy was not a terrorist. Not too long ago, an Israeli cop beat up an Ethiopian IDF soldier in uniform. In 1981, the Israeli police raided the Toldos Aharon Shul in Jerusalem on Shabbos, broke down the doors, beat up everyone in sight, and broke bones with their clubs without mercy; they destroyed and threw siddurim and other holy objects out the window, and worse, got away with what they did.

Did anyone read the mishpacha article from last week?
This is nothing new
Pinchas segalov murder,
Yossele Schumacher story,
Kidnapping newborn baby’s of religious family’s directly from the hospital and then claiming the baby died overnight (mostly sefardic immigrants but to a certain extent Ashkenazi immigrants also) to sell to rich secular parents looking to adopt because “they have enough kids already they won’t miss one”.
Using bodies of people who died for scientific research and disrespecting the bodies and refusing to release them to the families, to the extent that frum people were dieing at home rather then going to the hospital.
And many more stories

The best way to explain it that i can think of is with this story. Former chief rabbi lau once had a meeting with David ben gurion and asked if the story about him in the peel committee was true
The story goes that lord peel told ben gurion that in order to kick someone out of a house that you claim is yours you need a reliable document to prove that you are really the owner lord peel asked ben gurion if he has a document to prove that the jews are the owners of the land and ben gurion lifted up the Bible that was in front of him and said this is our document
After ben gurion confirmed to rabbi lau that the story is true rabbi lau asked him, “what would they have thought if you would’ve shown them a ripped up ruined copy of the Bible?” Ben gurion (who was a secular anti religious person who didn’t keep shabbos etc.) who was known as a smart charismatic guy who had a quick ready answer to anything he was asked had no answer so he remained silent… that silence is the best way to explain why the state exists

A pet peeve I have with people with disabilities is when they take advantage of their situation and exaggerate their disability which cause us further difficulties in caring for them. We love you and want to help but don’t be heavier on us than necessary.
