The New York Post reported that the parents only noticed something amiss on Dec. 29, when their son began vomiting up his formula. They took him to a doctor suspecting that he had a stomach virus. When his condition had not approved by Jan. 1, the baby was referred to hospital care, where he was discovered to be suffering from bleeding in his brain.
The parents told officials that a live-in nanny named Alexis Schultz cares for the infant, and the nanny admitted under interrogation to shaking the baby because of hunger and feeling overwhelmed while caring for the baby and his sister.
Schultz was arrested and charged with assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
Exams conducted in the pediatric intensive care unit at Maimonides Medical Center revealed that the baby was suffering from both an old bleed and a new bleed in the brain — indicating that he was shaken once in the past and it was not severe, and then was shaken again, developing symptoms, according to high-ranking police sources. He also suffered retinal hemorrhages in both eyes.
The case has been moved to the NYPD Brooklyn South Community Affairs Unit, who are working with the family to ensure that the incident is properly managed.
Too many of these stories. Nannies need better training. Or at least some basic safety info. At the hospital, moms are told that if they are feeling frustrated, to allow the baby to cry, and go into another room to calm down.
Would you trust nannies by lending them a nice amount of money?
