Swimply, launched by Bunim Laskin and Asher Weinberger, has raised $40 million in a funding round led by Mayfield. One of the backers is GGV Capital, one of Airbnb’s biggest investors. It’s no coincidence. The Swimply concept is amazingly similar to Airbnb. People who own swimming pools rent them out to people who want to swim – like Airbnb, only for pools.

Mr. Laskin came up with the concept at age 20, after he noticed a neighbor’s pool which was rarely in use, which he rented in exchange for helping fund the pool’s maintenance. Realizing he was onto something big, he found other pools by using Google Earth.

Last year Mr. Laskin appeared on an episode of Shark Tank to pitch the company.

People rent pools at an average price of $45 to $65 per hour, depending on several factors.

Bunim was quoted in TechCrunch describing the company’s rapid growth. “In 2020, we booked a lot of smaller groups. But this year, with people getting vaccinated, we saw more birthday parties being celebrated, swimming lessons coming back and people getting together again for the first time in a while.”.

In 2022, the company is looking to expand beyond pools, to hot tubs, tennis courts, backyards, rooftops and indoor gyms.

Hosts have the potential to make big money, with some earning over six figures per year.

Besides Mayfield and GGV, other backers include Conrad Shang and Collin West at Ensemble Ventures and a high-profile list of angel investors including Airbnb co-founder Nate Blecharczyk; Casey Winters, formerly of Pinterest and Grubhub.

The biggest advantage is that they have insurance. So anyone that comes through them is insured by their policy.

Isn’t there a potential problem with my homeowners insurance not covering any accidents occurring while the pool is rented?

These pools when rented like this are generally required to have proper insurance and lifeguards.

sounds like a good idea, UNTIL tragedy or crime strikes after all you have to allow the people INSIDE your house in order to use a bathroom once inside they can help themselves to items or people.

I was wondering about the insurance liability as well until I saw the responses. and while they are covered with insurance through the company for the pool , how much is that coverage and does it extend to whether or not someone does come inside the property or has an injury anywhere else on the property . Chas vshalom If there was a tragedy in the pool that is potentially a multi million dollar lawsuit. However besides that, Bear in mind that there are certain housing and building or zoning restrictions that you can only use your property for residential purposes and not for commercial purposes, and your neighbors may report you .But as long as all the bases are covered, very creative idea.
