LONDON (VINnews) — Britain’s Queen Elizabeth used the occasion of the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne to announce that Camilla Parker-Bowles, the wife of Prince Charles who is heir to the throne, will be Queen Consort, meaning that she will be known as Queen Camilla when Charles becomes King.

The 95-year-old monarch is celebrating her Platinum Jubilee after ascending the throne on her father’s death in February 1952. When she ascended the throne, her husband was known as Prince Philip but normally a female spouse automatically becomes queen when her husband is king. However the role of Camilla has always been shadowed by the immensely popular Princess Diana, Charles’s former wife and the mother of his two sons, who died in a car crash in 1997, a year after divorcing from the prince.
When Charles married Camilla in 2005, the couple announced Camilla would be “Princess Consort,” despite having the right to the title of Queen. Camilla also doesn’t use the title Princess of Wales, again a nod to the sentiments attached to Diana. These moves were in part due to uncertainty about public opinion regarding the marriage to Camilla, who was allegedly romantically involved with the prince during the course of his marriage to Diana.
The Queen’s current intervention means barriers to her becoming Queen have now been removed, and will allow her to have a fully-fledged royal role beside Charles.
The Queen’s personal endorsement follows her New Year announcement that Camilla would become a member of the Order of the Garter – the highest order of chivalry.
“I would like to express my thanks to you all for your support. I remain eternally grateful for, and humbled by, the loyalty and affection that you continue to give me,” the Queen said. “And when, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me; and it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service.”
On Saturday, Prince Charles and Camilla announced they were “touched and honoured by Her Majesty’s words” according to a spokesperson.
