Premlishan is in the Lviv province, which is currently under siege by Russian forces. The town has a robust Jewish history that dates back for centuries.
According to Yad Vashem, Rav Mendel of Premishlan was a disciple of the Baal Shem Tov; in 1775 he led a group of Chassidim to Jerusalem, where he died in 1794. Rav Meir bar Yaacov of Premishlan was also a follower of the Baal Shem Tov and a founder of the Premishlan dynasty. His work was continued by his son, Rav Aharon-Aryeh (died in 1813) who was one of the students of the Baal Shem Tov, Rav Yechiel-Michael of Zolochiv and Rav Elimelech of Liznesk.
The town historically had about 2,000-2,500 Jewish residents, possibly for centuries. Most of its residents were murdered by the Nazis, however a few individuals managed to evade them and were liberated in 1944.
