SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — A widely seen video of an 8-year-old Black child sobbing as he’s being led into a Syracuse police car over a bag of chips was called “heart wrenching” Wednesday by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, who said more needs to be done to build trust with communities of color.

The video taken Sunday shows a white officer holding the clearly distraught youth from behind by his elbows, leading him from a sidewalk to the back seat of a police vehicle. Another officer says the situation is about “stealing stuff.” The man recording the video argues with police to let the child go.

The video has been widely shared on social media, with many people condemning the officers for treating the child roughly. Hochul, at a COVID-19 briefing in Syracuse, said the video was difficult to watch.

“We have more work to do, and I know that the mayor is working closely with the police department to get to the bottom of everything,” said Hochul, a Democrat. “But also make sure that we do protect our children — that they’re handled in a different way when it comes to encounters with law enforcement.”

Syracuse police said Tuesday the officers’ actions were being reviewed, along with body-worn camera footage. Police said the incident involved an accusation of youths stealing from a store.

The 8-year-old was never handcuffed and was put in the rear of a patrol car to bring him home. Officers met with the child’s father and no charges were filed, police said.

The father, Anthony Weah , told Syracuse.com that officers were friendly at the house. But he said he was aghast after seeing the video.

“Why would the police treat that child like that?” Weah asked. “Over a $3 bag of chips.”

Ah chutzpa and bizayon to the governor and the liberal left who want to destroy our democracy!
A democracy means law and order, this includes even a ‘3 dollar bag of chips’, a bag of chips leads to much bigger things. (ayin sugya of ben sorer umorer)
So yes, the cops 1000% did the right thing and has absolutely no shaychus to color or race!

It really seems like the officers were doing the right thing.
Those that take issue with this probably bring up their kids trained to steal.

They only put the kid in the squad car and delivered him to his father, the kind of action cops would have done years ago

If I were the boy’s father I would be happy with the outcome. The child got a good scare which will hopefully be a good lesson.

In an article on a different site, it said that the officers knew the kid from previous encounters. This helps put it in perspective. This didn’t come out of nowhere. He had previous run-ins with the law. They didn’t randomly grab him off his bike with a stolen bag of chips. If it would have been his first time, they would have said, come on and let’s give it back.

SO WHAT if they were white and he was black?! You don’t want to be arrested, here’s a tip: don’t go against the law!

How about the numerous videos of Jewish people being beaten on the streets of NY, while the cops are busy munching donuts. Do you find that “wrenching” governor?

The six thinking people who posted before me, and you can count me as number seven, are all unconditionally opposed to the Governor’s reaction, which indeed appears to represent mainstream Democrat thought, and indeed the position of half of America. That position makes no sense, is based on liberal untested gobbledigook, and, if accepted, will hasten the downfall of America.

If he’s old enough to steal he’s old enough to be arrested.

the kid will learn a lesson from the police treatment that he did not learn at home.

Democrats always back the criminals.

If you dont deal with it now the little thief will turn into a bigger thug.
Yet these same democrats have no problem when the police arrest kids who go to school not vaccinated or not wearing a mask, they actually celebrate it and want more of it.

Would it be OK for the governor to steal something from her mension or it’s only ok if it’s from the hard working deli owner?

While I do not like GOP politics, SHE IS A Loser.
Let him learn, yes LEARN a lesson when he is young,
perhpas his father will teach him not to repeat it.
Or, as hochul will say: teach him how not to get caught.

A bag of chips and a lesson if you cry wolf they let you go free. A good lesson
that his father should have taught him. It did not hurt the child but perhaps saved
his future.

Either we are a society that teaches citizenship such as not tolerating stealing or we arent. No one is cutting his hand off or hurting him. Those publicizing the video and family name are doing a terrible disservice to the kid who can now never live it down and will have to live with this as his legacy. The public should respect his privacy. Yes the police did him a favor, as well as doing their job. It may not look pretty but disciplining an eight year old is never pretty, even when parents do it. He should be given two hours of age appropriate public service to pay back the resources used to discipline him as well as appropriate counseling/therapy.

Good for these police. Kids need to learn a lesson. If it were my son, chas veshalom, I would hope the cops did the same to him.

To all the commenters below me:

This kid is a little kid who might become as you say probably BECAUSE of this. We all have little children- what if your precious little baby grabbed a potato chip bag off the wall. And then was grabbed by police officers and brought out in a police car. Most probably, this kid was terrified and thought he was being arrested. Instead of thinking about what he will be think about what he is right now. These officers could have treated him more kindly with mercy. They didn’t.
