As millions of Ukraine citizens have escaped the country, for some, fleeing Ukraine is out of question, and freedom is nowhere in sight.
These are the physically wounded, elderly, and Holocaust survivors who have not been able to escape. With constant bombings and mass- killings surrounding them, they have been left behind.
Without help, these people are likely to remain in the destroyed country to fend for themselves.
“Our father was injured by shrapnel from a missile while going to fetch food to keep our family alive” Shira Cohen daughter of a 71-year-old Jew who was rescued by a team of ZAKA volunteers from the city of Mariopul.
ZAKA Search And Rescue has set up a mission to evacuate the wounded from Ukraine. It begins with an emergency escort entering the Ukraine – the only organization sending in medical personnel in the line of fire.
Once brought to safety, with the assistance and contribution of CHABAD MOLDOVA triage centers have been set up to treat them until they can be transported to their next destination. Once ready for transport, they are transported to Israel or other countries for further care.
Nachman Dickstein, Deputy Commander of ZAKA Ukraine, said that “increasing fighting in some areas in the heart of Ukraine presents us with many challenges and makes the rescues extremely complex. Wounded and elderly people with complex medical problems arrive at the humanitarian aid complex we have set up in Chisinau after days of suffering and fear and even real danger to life.”
To date ZAKA has saved over 150 wounded refugees, many whom are holocaust survivors.
Our expenses range from evacuation, transportation, medical supplies and medical site, and private chartered flights.
Rabbi Zushe Abelsky, director of Chabad Moldova, stated: “Broken and utterly desperate people come here, some staying in a closed basement under bombs for over a month without food and water, until they are rescued by volunteers who save their lives. Here in the compound, we provide them with assistance and a sense of home, along with vital medical care prior to their flight to Israel.”
We need your help, to be able to extend our activities and offer protection to the rest of our Jewish family in Ukraine.
The more funding we have the more individuals we can rescue and aid. There are members of Klal yisroel who unfortunately we lost, please help us make sure every jew is saved!
