JERUSALEM (VINnews) — A 24-year-old woman from Akko, Sapir Nahum, disappeared from her home last week. Nahum, a single mother of two, had separated from her Arab boyfriend and he was the main suspect in her disappearance. Police searched for days for Nahum near the Arab village of Ibatin adjacent to Akko. On Sunday a body was found near the village and later identified as that of Nahum.

The Arab boyfriend, Walla Ruben Halaila was arrested by police in connection with the murder but denies all connection to the incident. However Halaila’s criminal record is far from clean – he has been indicted in the past for armed robbery, grievous bodily harm and illegal possession of weapons. Halaila had been arrested 16 times since 2006 and served four prison terms, the last one in 2018. It is highly likely that Halaila is involved in Nahum’s abduction even if he himself was not her murderer.
Yet the main question which was hotly disputed after Nahum’s murder was whether it should be viewed as yet another statistic of domestic violence or whether the murder of a Jewish woman by Arabs is a nationalist crime. Internal Security Minister Omer Bar-Lev tweeted that the incident is a case of “violence against women” and said that the struggle for women’s safety would continue.
However Anat Gopstein, wife of Bentzi Gopstein, the head of the Lehava organization which seeks to prevent Arab-Jewish intermarriage, said that Nahum was clearly another example of an increasing phenomemon of “gender-nationalist terror”, since the last few cases of domestic murder were of Jewish women by their Arab husbands. Gopstein’s husband, Bentzi said that the organization had reached out to Nahum and offered to help her separate from her Arab boyfriend and receive support from them but Nahum had rebuffed them, stating that “he really loves me, he won’t do anything to me.” Gopstein said that “if she had listened to us then, she would be alive now.”
The organization has since initiated a campaign stating that “Assimilation kills” with a slogan stating “Leave him now! Don’t wait to be the next on the list.”

The Yad L’Achim organization which seeks to rescue women and girls who have been taken to Arab villages by their boyfriends was flooded this week with calls from worried parents and relatives asking for assistance in smuggling their children away from the Arab villages. The organization said that since the wave of terrorist violence, some of it from Israeli Arab elements, there has been a steady rise in requests for help from Jewish women trapped in alliances with Arabs.
Many of these girls came from bad situations to begin with. I think Yad Leachim devotes itself to rescuing them. Many of these girls marry Arabs who seem quite charming but once they move into the man’s household, it’s old-style domestic abuse.
