JERUSALEM (VINnews) — A member of the Jerusalem Faction was arrested and charged with desertion during the course of a demonstration outside a jail at 2 AM on Monday morning. The demonstration took place at the Hadarim jail where Tzemach Tzarfati, a member of the Rabbinical Committee for Communications, is being held on charges of extortion and blackmail. Tzarfati allegedly blackmailed tens of cellular phone stores, receiving a reported sum of 200,000 NIS in return for preventing demonstrations against these stores.

Among the demonstrators calling for Tzarfati’s release was a yeshiva student from the Chadera yeshiva which is affiliated with the Jerusalem Faction, which does not allow students to defer their army service via the draft offices. This practice is viewed as a tacit recognition of the IDF’s agreement with chareidi leaders that a “quota” of chareidi conscripts should be drafted annually, an agreement they hotly dispute. Students in Jerusalem Faction yeshivas are deemed deserters by the army and many are jailed by military police, leading to numerous demonstrations by the Jerusalem Faction in recent years.
Police transferred the student arrested at the demonstration to military police, who placed him in an IDF jail. The Jerusalem Faction has said that they will demonstrate if the yeshiva student currently in jail is not released.
