Biden’s senior staff will include National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, who is considered the closest person to the president on matters of diplomacy and security. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, who is Jewish and whose stepfather was a Holocaust survivor, will also accompany the president. The Secretary of State’s advisor on Middle Eastern Affairs, Barbara Leaf, has also joined the president’s party.

Jose W. Fernandez, Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment, will be discussing regional economic initiatives, while Brett Mcgurk, the White House Coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa, who also served under former president Trump, will be the president’s senior advisor on the region.

The entourage also includes Deputy National Security Advisor for Cyber and Emerging Technology Anne Neuberger, a chareidi Brooklyn-born Jew. Neuberger’s grandparents were Holocaust survivors and Satmar chasidim who were among those on the Air France plane which was hijacked to Entebbe airport in Uganda and eventually released by the IDF. Neuberger speaks five languages: English, Hebrew, Yiddish, Arabic and French.

Another senior official arriving with the president is Amos Hochstein, the president’s Senior Advisor for Energy Security. Hochstein is the president’s representative in the negotiations between Israel and Lebanon over the maritime border. Born in Israel to parents who immigrated from the US, Hochstein served in the IDF between 1992 and 1995 and then moved to Washington where he served in the Obama administration.
