Three Views About Lapid’s Motives Re: Operation Breaking Dawn

(Jerusalem) It seems that there are three varying views about why Prime Minister Yair Lapid opted to move ahead with “Operation Breaking Dawn” – all of them quite different.

Joint List MK Sami Abou Shehadeh accused Lapid’s “Operation Breaking Dawn” to be politically motivated, in that both his and Defense Minister Ganz’s poll ratings were down significantly.  Wars to defend the citizenry are always effective in bringing up one’s popularity.

The second theory, and the one that most Israeli citizens believe is that this was not the case.   The arrest and elimination of two of Islamic Jihad’s top leaders was necessary because of intel about an imminent attack on Israeli citizens near the Gaza border.

A third theory is that it was partially politically motivated in that the Prime Minister wanted to display to the world that he was capable of restoring Israel’s lost honor – or sense of deterrence.  This received some backing from a recent statement of the Prime Minister himself, where he employed that very term.

“The operation has restored Israeli deterrence..” – Lapid announced Monday evening. “All our goals were achieved. Whoever tries to harm us will pay with his life.”  This third theory is also of the opinion that Lapid’s goal was to restore deterrence against not only Islamic Jihad and Hamas, but also Iran – a point that both Lapid and Bennet had agreed to pursue before their joint-government fell apart.

However, there is a harsh reality that both the first and third theories ignore.  Any form of coalition requires the ultra-Orthodox parties in order to survive. The blunt force traumatic anti-Hareidi approach of Yair Lapid has proven to be unworkable.

If Lapid’s actions were truly politically motivated – it would have to have been accompanied with a gesture toward the Haredi parties – such as the one in the video below.

Since this has not happened, it is clear that “Operation Breaking Dawn” was to protect Israel’s citizenry – and not for politics.  There is, of course, the possibility that Lapid is banking on the religious parties not uniting in the upcoming November elections – which, with enough goodwill and support from the success of “Breaking Dawn” may do the trick.

As an interesting aside, the original Hebrew lyrics to the music track of the video found below were actually written by Yair Lapid – “Sheteheyeh tzair lanetzach.”  The Haredi version of the song changed the words to, “Shetehe Tzaddik LaNetzach.”  Of course, Lapid had actually translated Bob Dylan’s son that he wrote for his youngest son (from his first wife), Jakob – Forever Young.   Lapid’s version was made famous by Rami Kleinshtein.

The Haredi version of the song is accompanied, obviously, by pictures of Lapid that were clearly photoshopped.

Kudos to Lapid from a Likud voter. I didn’t think he would do it but this was a strong attack on our enemies.

I think the only way to make that Lapid ad more insulting and offensive to Chareidim is to have a woman sing the song.
