Crowds flocked to the corner of Flushing Avenue and Skillman Streets outside Eden Palace, with video surfacing on Twitter showing a sea of black hats and shtreimels in the crowd of Zeldin supporters.

The congressman fired up the crowd, blasting the New York Times for dedicating its premium above-the-fold space on the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks to inciting an attack on Orthodox schools.

“They didn’t talk about September 11th,” said Zeldin. “They didn’t talk about an allied nation having a new king, instead they attacked yeshiva education.”

Zeldin slammed his opponent as well, announcing that Albany had declared war on yeshiva education. He noted that the day after the article ran, just before the Board of Regents was scheduled to vote on the proposed education regulations, Governor Kathy Hochul declined to share her opinions on the issue with reporters.

“She said that she didn’t want to comment because it was getting too hot,” said Zeldin. “She said that it was not within her purview as governor – the governor is able to have an opinion on anything. The governor can state that opinion publicly and the governor can move public opinion.”

Zeldin also shared some personal history, telling the crowd that his mother had been a fourth grade yeshiva teacher in Brooklyn, with enthusiastic cheers drowning out his words as he proclaimed, “I’ve said it in the past and I’ll say it again – it would be an honor to be the greatest champion of yeshiva education.”

In addition to speaking about yeshiva education, Zeldin addressed other issues that have been affecting Brooklyn’s Jewish communities, including repealing cashless bail and restoring safety to New York City’s streets.

“New Yorkers have been under attack,” said Zeldin adding a pledge for “zero tolerance for anti-Semitism, on our streets, in any of our schools and in the halls of government. You and your families deserve to be safe.”

Despite the late hour, the rally drew participants of all ages, with video emerging of Chasidic boys preparing a song for the event singing, “Lee Zeldin for governor one term, Lee Zeldin for governor a second term and a third term. Go out and vote, one-two-three for Lee Zeldin.”
