“The unfortunate and tragic phenomenon which we heard about during the course of the festival is not new. We hear almost every year about people who choked while eating donuts – both adults and children,” the ministry said.

So why does this happen and how can we mitigate the danger of asphyxia and make eating donuts safer? The ministry explained that “a donut is soft but from the moment we start eating it, it becomes a sticky dough. It is recommended to take small bites and to remember that a donut needs intensive chewing not less than when chewing a steak.

“If you have children up to the age of 3, or if you are a senior citizen with false teeth or missing teeth, if you have difficulty chewing hard foods and have a dry mouth or medical conditions which make swallowing difficult – be much more careful. Medical specialists and speech therapists can assist in treating difficulties swallowing. Look after yourselves and happy Chanukah!”

During the first four days of Chanukah, a 70-year-old resident of Netanya and a 67-year-old resident of Bnei Brak died while attempting to eat donuts. A 65-year-old resident of Ofakim choked on a donut and is still in serious condition in hospital.

Inhaling food will result in asphyxiation. Aspirating food into the lungs is not healthy.

Masks should be mandated for anyone eating a doughnut. N95 preferred with no holes. This should halt the epidemic of choking on doughnuts.

2 people died in NYC over a 20 year period from falling debris from buildings… now the whole city is under scaffolding to prevent the danger of falling bricks. Eating donuts appears to be far mor dangerous. Maybe NYC will ban donuts.

There are foods which are harmful, but less so than these. They are …flour which has been sifted so well that no bran is left …A man who is wise, overcomes his desires, is not drawn by his appetites and eats nothing of the aforementioned unless he needs them for a medical reason, is certainly diligent. Rambam, Hilchos Da’os 4:10.
Today, grains are often grown on depleted soil, with the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, with many additional unhealthy and stress-producing chemicals also added, such as dough conditioners, preservatives, artificial colors and flavors, and more as well. Industrial oils such as canola and cottonseed were traditionally considered weeds, as they have toxic chemistry and are usually also processed with hexane and other neuro-toxins and other unhealthy chemicals. Other oils that are generally considered healthy or okay to fry with, such as coconut or palm oils, should also not be continually reheated as is typically done commercially in order to limit expenses.
