NEW YORK (VINnews) — Iranian writer and artist Mehdi Bahman was reportedly sentenced to death in Iran on charges of espionage for Israel. Bahman, a noted author whose artwork has been showcased in the Library of Congress, was arrested in October, days after he gave an interview to chareidi journalist Sivan Rahav-Meir on Israel’s Channel 12 News. During the interview, Bahman described the situation in Iran during the anti-government protests.

Protests have gripped Iran following the September 16 death of 22-year-old Amini after she was arrested by the morality police. Hundreds of protesters have been killed in more than two months of nationwide unrest, including dozens of minors. Six people have been sentenced to death and two have already been executed by the regime.

Some reports said that Mahdi had been taken to the notorious Evin Prison, which is known for incarcerating political prisoners, after his arrest.

According to a report Thursday in the Iranian media, Bahman was convicted because of the interview on Israeli television, although in the past Bahman had interviewed a number of times with Israeli journalists. After he drew an artwork version of the biblical book of Ezra with notes and commentaries, he collaborated with an Israeli author who translated his book to Hebrew.

During the 2021 interview, Bahman expressed his conviction  that there would be peace between Israel and Iran and claimed that the Iranian population does not hate Israel.

They’ve really become frightened if interviews are now a hangable offense in Iran Maybe the senile one in the White House should be giving support to the Iranian people fighting for democracy

The leaders of the free world are morally obligated to protest in the strongest terms against this travesty of justice and if they refrain they have lost any authority they have to guide others on how o conduct themselves. This includes all religious and political leaders and the leaders of all NGOs,s
