The streaming service depicted Madoff in an ad with horns and pointed ears, an antisemitic trope that dates back at least hundreds of years.
Allison Josephs, founder of “Jew in the City”, blasted Netflix in a tweet, saying, “Madoff is a bonafide villain, but it is NOT ok to put horns on a Jew. Jews as horned devils is pre-medieval trope.”
Netflix promoted “Bernie Madoff: The Monster of Wall Street,” using the horned image against a red backdrop, which some have interpreted as conveying that Jews are Satanic.
Way to go Allison! Klal Yisroel appreciates you

“Stop Antisemitism” tweeted: “Bernie Madoff is a crook. A thief. A criminal who stole millions from innocent individuals and non for profits.Netflix can easily illustrate any/all of the above without the “greedy and evil Jew with horns” take.”

Josephs suggested that the company was responsive to her complaints. “We recently had a great meeting with @Netflix about problematic Jewish representation,” she tweeted. “They are eager to learn from us.”
In addition, she addressed the issue on her blog, writing, “Because of our Hollywood Bureau, we now have a relationship with Netflix….we were very encouraged by how open they were in our first meeting and how interested they are in learning from us.”
She added, “We are hopeful that we can have some meaningful conversations with them in the new year.”
Josephs did not specify what results she expects to see, nor whether Netflix is open to any concrete changes, in addition to engaging in meaningful dialogue.
Netflix has had an obsession of sorts with shows that portray Orthodox Jews extremely negatively, including “My Unorthodox Life”, “Shtisel”, and a 2017 documentary called “One of Us.”.
Shtisel is a show that displays Orthodox Jews extremely negatively? On the contrary. It is a very sympathetic portrayal of chareidim. Various characters in the show have certain faults, as humans tend to, but the overall effect of the show is to show chareidim as sympathetic human beings.
boycott these idiots they will learn quickly
It has become acceptable to attack Jews in America Time to get training in handling a gun In Europe they had same warnings but ignored are we doing the same.
Will cancel my Netflix subscription !!!
I looked at the blog referenced in the story. I do not see anyplace where Netflix the cartoon image was run beside the photograph promoting their program. Can someone provide a link?
Great time to put out such a movie!! Would you put out a movie about a bad black man now? Antisemitism is on the rise big time now!! Shame on Netflix!!
They do seem to be in competition with the systematically anti-semitic nyt to see who can bash frum yidden more. Who can employ more age old anti semitic stereotypes?
Are they a corporate sponsor of the anti frum hate org, yaffed? Is notorious anti frum hate peddler [and unemployed shnorrer] nick moster on their board?
