Rabbi Liberman had been hospitalized Thursday in serious condition, suffering from pneumonia. Until his final days, Rabbi Liberman was deeply involved in Torah study despite feeling weaker. On Asarah Beteves he was Sandak at two Bris ceremonies.

Rabbi Liberman was the author of Mishnas Yosef, 14 volumes of responsa on issues of Shvi’is and laws of Eretz Yisrael, on which he was considered a world authority, as well as on all other parts of Shulchan Aruch. He also authored three seforim on Shas, two with Torah commentaries and three with Drashos given on various occasions.

Born in Pressburg, Czechoslovakia in Nissan 5688 (1928), Rabbi Liberman was a descendant of the Chasam Sofer on his father’s side and of Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael of Cherkassy on his mother’s side. He was close to the Daas Sofer, who served as rabbi of Pressburg, and continued his relationship with him after he came to the land of Israel. He was also close to the Chebiner Rav, Rabbi Dov Berish Weidenfeld.

Rabbi Liberman married Malka, a daughter of the Ziditchov-Makover Rebbe, Rabbi Yechiel Chaim Labin and was a brother-in-law of Rabbi Aharon of Belz. Rabbi Liberman was buried on Motzaei Shabbos next to Rabbi Aharon of Belz’s tomb on Har HaMenuchos.

Rabbi Liberman was appointed to head the kollelim of Shomrei Hachomos and later, when he moved to the Neve Tzvi neighborhood, became the rabbi of the Sadigora Beis Midrash where he served as rabbi for the rest of his life.

After the death of his rebbetzin in 2015, Rabbi Liberman moved to the house of his son-in-law Rabbi Mendel Fuchs in Ramot.

Rabbi Yosef Liberman, who passed away on the day the Torah describes the death of Yosef Hatzadik, is survived by children and grandchildren following in his footsteps, including Rabbi Yehoshua Liberman, head of the Heichal Mishpat Beis Midrash Dayanus and kollel Shevet Halevi, Rabbi Yekusiel Liberman, a rabbi at the Sadigora Beis Midrahs, Rabbi Chaim Weiss, the rabbi of Beitar, Rabbi Chaim Shmerler and Rav Mendel Fuchs, rabbi of Shomrei Hachomos-Ramot.

May his memory be blessed

95 is בא בימים. Unfortunately, many of today’s greatest tzaddikim are older. We need to find new Torah giants.
