The new data makes it clear that the spike in antisemitic crime has not subsided under Mayor Eric Adams, who took office in January 2022, and it may be getting worse.
As reported by the Times of Israel, there were over 250 antisemitic hate crimes reported to authorities in New York City in 2022, according to police data.
The NYPD released figures for December showing 11 antisemitic incidents, which is a relatively low amount.
However throughout 2022, the data shows 263 anti-Jewish hate crimes reported, an average of one every 33 hours.
That number is a sharp increase, more than double the 121 antisemitic crimes in 2020 and significantly more than the 196 incidents in 2021.
In 2019, the first year the NYPD began organizing data differently on hate crimes reports, there were 242 anti-Jewish bias incidents.
According to the police’s hate crimes dashboard, Jews were targeted last year far more than any other group. In some months, Jews were victimized more than all other groups combined. And the vast majority of attackers are minorities.
The incidents in the past year range from violent assault to verbal harassment, property damage, and antisemitic graffiti.
Overall crime went up in New York City last year, although murders and shootings decreased.
The spike has been observed nationwide as well. The ADL recorded 2,717 antisemitic incidents across the country in 2021, a 34% increase from 2021, and the highest since it began tracking in 1979.
