WSJ: DOJ Considered, Then Rejected, Using FBI to Oversee Biden Lawyers’ Document Search

WASHINGTON (Yaakov M / VINnews) — Ever since the ‘Garage-gate’ scandal went public, many have wondered why the Justice Department treated President Biden with kid gloves and gave his lawyers complete autonomy, as opposed to President Trump, whose Mar-a-lago home was raided by the FBI in intrusive fashion.

According to a new bombshell report in the Wall Street Journal, the DOJ considered having FBI agents monitor the search by Biden’s lawyers for classified documents but shockingly decided against it.

The report says that the department opted against an FBI monitor (which many would consider a no-brainer) both to avoid complicating later stages of the investigation and because Biden’s attorneys quickly turned over a first batch and were technically “cooperating” with the DOJ.

After Biden’s lawyers discovered documents marked classified at his Washington-based think tank office on Nov. 2, the Justice Department opened an inquiry into why and how they got there.

Biden’s legal team prepared to search other BIden properties for more, and discussed with the Department the idea of having FBI agents present.

Instead, inexplicably, the two sides agreed that Biden’s personal attorneys would inspect the homes alone, essentially using the honor system, by notifying the Department as soon as they identified any potentially classified records.

Making things more bizarre, the lawyers themselves do not have clearance to see classified material, so they could not even read the marked documents themselves.

Defense Attorney Jonathan Turley, a renowned pundit, tweeted about the absurdity of the latest revelations, and called the DOJ’s decision “bizarre”.

Turley wrote, “Why would any investigator not want to conduct a search? The alternative was to allow uncleared, unknown counsel to sort through potential classified material. There is no legal or logical reason why the DOJ would prefer private counsel to do such a search.”

He added, “It also undermines the Justice Department’s position in both cases. This is the department threatening criminal charges over mishandling of classified material. Yet, WSJ is reporting that it opted for the least secure method of searching for additional documents…The DOJ went along with a bizarre “look but don’t read” approach in the use of uncleared persons after finding highly classified material….If they were given the chance to conduct the search themselves for either Trump or Biden documents, it is bizarre that they would not take that option. The WSJ is saying that they were given that option and declined it.”

In the case of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Florida, federal agents obtained a warrant to search it in August, after more than a year of negotiations between Trump’s lawyers, the National Archives and the DOJ, and after Mr. Trump’s lawyers said all documents had been returned.
