JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Shas leaders and other members of the Likud-led coalition in Israel reacted angrily to the High Court decision to disqualify Aryeh Deri from serving as a minister in Netanyahu’s government.

Yoav Ben-Tzur, minister for Welfare and Social Security, said that “the principle of reasonability cannot be an amorphous judicial code which has no basis in the law in any democratic country in the world and which allows the court to promote far-reaching decisions based on personal agendas. Are two million people who voted for a right-wing government knowing that Deri would serve as a minister suddenly unreasonable people?”

Ben-Tzur added “Does the elected prime minister who appointed him not have reasonable latitude to choose his ministers? Most of the Knesset members who voted for his appointment, are they unreasonable? In any democratic parliament the highest authority is the legislative arm- who were elected directly by the people. As a democratic nation it is unreasonable that the judiciary should block the will of the people when there is no legal rationale to invalidate the appointment.”

Yaakov Tessler (UTJ) said that “the court has once again proved today that the reasonability principle is totally unreasonable, with an attempt to change the clear will of the nation to see Aryeh Deri as a minister in the governement representing hundreds of thousands of voters, as proved in the elections. The coalition must complete the necessary steps to allow his reappointment as a minister by law.

MK Yitzchak Pindrus said that “the use of the reasonability principle demonstrates that the court is not the defender of the law but rather the defender of its own political agenda. R’ Aryeh Deri has suffered an injustice. We will find the way to allow him to continue his tremendous contribution to the Israeli government in a ministerial role.

Meir Porush, minister of Jerusalem and Jewish Heritage said that “after the left lost in the election, the cloak wearers are trying to achieve a political coup from their court. We support the required legislation which will restore Rabbi Deri to his position as soon as possible.”

National Security Minister Ben-Gvir said that “all those who tried to reach compromises and agreements can see that the court, which was not elected, has demonstrated that it doesn’t want agreements or compromises and wants unfettered power over elected public officials. Those who performed a legal coup without agreement or discussion have not internalized that the people have said their will explicitly in the last elections. Reforms must be done now.”

MK Miki Zohar said that “hundreds of thousands of Israelis went to the ballot and democratically elected Aryeh Deri and the court cancelled their votes. The legal reforms are needed now more than ever.”

Justice Minister Yariv Levin said that “at 4PM Israeli citizens received an absurd announcement from the High Court, stating that their vote in the election- was cancelled.

“The ruling did not just trample the vote of 400,000 Shas voters but rather the vote of most Israelis who knew all the facts and voted for a government with Aryeh Deri.

“I’ll do all necessary so that this glaring injustice done to Aryeh Deri, Shas and Israeli democracy- will be fully rectified.”

blah, blah, blah – all these guys are just trying to protect their backs when they get caught with their – hands in the cookie jar.
A convicted criminal that got his day in court, has no right or business leading people of a democratic nation. This is the reason we need to have and must protect the supreme court.

Democracy isn’t just votes, its much more than just votes and winner takes all politics

democracy requires:
1) an educated populace that grasps how the world works and doesn’t wallow in conspiracy theories

2) an informed populace through a free press that reports misconduct and doesn’t shove everything under the rug ,

3) free speech, (remember Stalinist Russia also had elections, which he by the way won with 98% percent, so election without a free press and people feeling free to express their opinions without intimidation or threats is meaningless)

4) basic human right that cannot be taken away even if the majority of public opinions, (imagine majority Christians in the USA decide one day that the US is Christian nationalist country as Marjory Taylor Greene claims and Jews have no right, would you also be saying, they won the election fair and square, the “majority rules” of course not, the rule of law and the courts stand guard against the “tyranny of the majority”)

5)independent judiciary (just like the US has a supreme court that can block laws congress makes, the US supreme court is now hearing a case about Shabbos observant Jews’ rights, I’m sure if congress voted to take away those rights it the US supreme court would overrule them, and you wouldn’t scream, “congress was elected and they can do whatever they want”)

Deri doesn’t project a good vibe.

Why can’t they institute term limits in Israel? That would solve so much of these problems.
