IDF Pessimistic About End Of Breakwave Counterterror Operations: ‘Terrorist Motivation Still Very High’

JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Despite numerous forays into terrorist enclaves in Judea and Samaria, the IDF is still pessimistic about the success of its Breakwave operation. The operation, which was initiated after a series of deadly terror attacks against Israelis last March and April, has seen IDF soldiers performing arrest operations on a near-daily basis to try and destroy terrorist infrastructure in Judea and Samaria.

Yet a new report by IDF officials says that despite significant achievements in breaking up the Lions Den terrorist group in Shechem, many other terror elements are still active in the region.

During 2022, 171 terrorists were eliminated in Judea and Samaria and in the first month of 2023, 35 more Palestinians were killed, 95% of them terrorists. Yet the motivation to conduct terror attacks has not lessened according to intelligence sources and the weakening Palestinian Authority (PA) has little motivation to prevent them as well.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad are actively seeking to encourage attacks and are paying young Arabs sums ranging from 2000 NIS to 10000 NIS to carry out attacks. Intelligence sources say that there are huge numbers of illegal weapons in Judea and Samaria, with practically every Arab household owning at least one firearm, making it easier for terrorists to access weapons. Some of these weapons are owned by the PA security apparatus, whose members have recently participated in some terrorist attacks and shown less motivation to curb terror as the PA slowly crumbles and loses grip on the Palestinian street.
