JERUSALEM (VINnews) — In a continuation of the counterterrorism operation begun on Saturday night near the city of Jericho, the IDF and Shin Bet operatives conducted a further arrest operation in the Aqabat Jabr refugee camp in the city. During the operation the IDF forces came under fire and eliminated five terrorists, most of whom are identified with Hamas.

The operation was designed to arrest a terrorist cell which had carried out a shooting at the nearby community of Vered Yericho on January 28. Two terrorists armed with weapons and military vests arrived at the entrance of a restaurant at the community of Vered Yeriho, where 30 people were sitting at the time, in order to carry out a deadly attack. Due to a firearm malfunction, the terrorists left after firing one shot and fled toward the city of Jericho.
After the attack, Shin Bet and IDF intelligence effort ascertained that the armed suspects were barricading themselves in a residence in the Aqabat Jabr Camp adjacent to the city of Jericho, with the assistance of their families and locals, while declaring their intention to continue with terrorist activities.
The IDF attempted unsuccessfully Saturday night to locate the suspects and the operation continued Sunday night as the Shin Bet detailed two possible places where the terrorists wer barricaded. The Lions of the Valley battalion reached one of the places and the terrorists opened fire on them. The company commander was hit on his bullet-proof vest but succeeded in returning fire and eliminating the terrorists. Other forces eliminated other terrorists, with five terrorists killed and three more arrested.
Most of the terrorists were members of Hamas who had participated in the January 28 attack or assisted the terrorists from the attack.
In other activities in Judea and Samaria, IDF forces arrested six more terror suspects as part of the Breakwave operation to curb terror in the region.
