IRAN (VINnews) — In January, Ali Reza Akbari, an Iranian-British national who had once risen in the ranks to become Iran’s deputy minister of defense, was hanged by the evil regime on charges of espionage. The UK and other Western nations condemned the execution.

A bombshell report by the New York Times claims that Akbari had indeed been acting as an informant to sabotage Iran’s nuclear program, by leaking secrets since 2004.

The report, quoting “three Western intel and national security officials,” says that the UK passed on information from Akbari to Israel regarding Iran’s nuclear activities at the Fordo site, which had not been previously known to Western intelligence officials.

In a 2008 meeting, a senior British intelligence officer reportedly revealed to Israel that the UK was working with an Iranian spy who had significant information about its nuclear program. The report suggests that the officer was referring to Akbari.

According to the report, Akbari also provided British authorities with the names of around 100 senior Iranian officials, including top nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, who was killed in November 2020, likely by Mossad.

Akbari held high positions in Iran’s defense establishment, including the role of deputy minister of defense for foreign affairs and a position in the secretariat of the Supreme National Security Council, according to Iranian state media.

Iran’s judiciary said that Akbari was sentenced to death for “corruption on earth and harming the country’s internal and external security by passing on intelligence.”

His execution was strongly criticized by UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who called it a “callous and cowardly act carried out by a barbaric regime with no respect for the human rights of their own people.”
