Asher’s proposal, which passed its preliminary reading in the Knesset last week, included explanatory notes which state that, “Recently we have been witnessing an expanding phenomenon of incitement to hatred towards the charedi population. Particularly severe are the cases in which the incitement is carried out by elected officials with the aim of dividing the people and thereby reaping political gain while harming an entire community and the unity of the people. This harm also has other consequences, including the entrenchment of racism in society towards the charedi population.”

Asher portrayed Labor leader Merav Michaeli as using racist rhetoric against the chareidi community as she lashed out at the chareidim, stating: “all the wearers of kippot, all the rabbis, all the long-beards, all the long coats, all those that are holy in their eyes.” Asher  responded by stating that “a group targeted because of their garb, long peyos, and beards can suffer from racism.”

Why would he think that the law should be limited to haredim, and not hate speech against all others? There’s plenty of hate speech to go around, and coming from many groups, including haredim.

Chareidim and non-chareidim are the same race.

mk asher in confusing “racism” (גזענות) with “discrimination” (אפליה). both are reprehensible, but they aren’t the same thing. the knesset is responsible for drafting laws, and its members should at least know the difference.

We all know why the choshuva MK did not include the Edat Mizrachi in the racism bill. His voters would go to jail first 🙂
