NEW JERSEY (VINnews) — President Trump hosted about 150 Orthodox Jewish leaders at his Bedminster golf course Monday. The gathering comes as primary season heats up, with Trump and Ron DeSantis both vying for the support of frum Jews, especially amid growing tensions between the Israeli government and the Biden administration.

Following a prayer for “our dear president,” Trump was presented with a silver Torah crown. It read: “Give thanks to Hashem for He is Good, for His Kindness endures forever. Presented to President Donald J. Trump — for his extraordinary and heroic efforts to help the State of Israel and the Jewish People. He and his family should be blessed eternally.”

Trump read aloud the proclamation, followed by a speech about Israel. “Let me put it this way,” Trump told the crowd, “If we don’t win, Israel is in big trouble. I mean it.”

The dinner for about 150 people was organized by the Israel Heritage Foundation. Among the leaders are Farley Weiss and Dr. Joe Frager, the past president and vice president of the National Council of Young Israel’s board of directors.

Rabbi David Katz, the organization’s executive director, said the group feels Trump has earned his place in history for his steadfast support for Israel, his administration’s efforts to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, and for recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. “This is our expression of gratitude,” he said.

Why a Torah crown? They wanted to thank him for political actions taken, I understand well. A different type of gift would have been more fitting however, I believe, rather than such a religious related object.

A crown has some kedusha and requires geniza. This gift may not be halachically appropriate especially since it may be put alongside a Christian Bible or other inappropriate items in a display.

This is a relatively new group trying to support Israel politically. It is not a major established Jewish organization however. To call everyone who was at the event a Jewish leader is watering and defining down the meaning of that term to dangerously low levels. Maybe you could call them a group of machers and wannabees instead.

IMHO inappropriate gift. Inappropriate flattery. Trump is better than any democrat but he should allow a normal republican to run

I would like to understand how Jewish leaders can honor a man who has met with vicious anti-Semites and thereby shows tolerance for anti-Semitism. He has empowered anti-Semites because he has accepted them as part of the mainstream

Trump has boasted that he did more for toeivah’niks than any other President. He said it in a speech to them just a few months ago.

So to give him such a gift is obscene. Maybe he needs a copy of the ten commandments.

The Torah, except for laws of the sheva mitzvos, is not for goyim. It would have been better to reward him with books of the sheva mitzvos and on Israel’s significance , according to Torah, for the Jews.

Why didn’t a Chasidishe Ruv like Duvid Katz wear his shtreimel for such an important event? Where is the kuvid for the nusi and the kesser?

What is Duvid Katz, formerly from Igud Harabunim doing there? When did he become such a big Tziyoni?

I will not vote for Trump in the primaries but would if he ran against Biden again. Nevertheless a showing of Hakaras HaTov is important for four years of world peace (albeit not within Washington) and low-inflation prosperity. All those here who would rather give him a (seifer torah laining) Yad with the middle finger, lack this virtue.
