Hamodia Newspaper Forced By Court Order To Publish Engagement Of R. Shaul’s Adherents

JERUSALEM (VINnews) — In an unusual incident which silhouetted the chasm between the two opposing factions in the Gur chasidus, the Hamodia newspaper was forced by court order to publish an engagement announcement for a member of Rabbi Shaul’s faction – and made no secret of the fact.

As is customary, the Hamodia newspaper announces all the new engagements on its front page, including the name of the choson and kallah and their place of study. However due to the current rift within the chasidus, the newspaper refrains from publishing the engagements from Rav Shaul’s community, even when they involve families who have members in both camps.

Last week, R’ Shlomo Elbaum’s son got engaged. R’ Shlomo is a lawyer and has represented R’ Shaul’s faction in numerous legal proceedings they have had with Gur. R’ Shlomo submitted an engagement ad which predictably was refused by Hamodia but he then decided to go to court to try and force the newspaper to publish his announcement.

The newspaper claimed in its defence that it cannot publish the place of study for students from R’ Shaul’s community as it is called “Penei Menachem” and this is an insult to the mainstream yeshiva which has the same name.

The court agreed that the yeshiva’s name should not be published and instead the yeshiva’s address should be placed in the ad. Thus, the Choson was described as studying in “The yeshiva at 2 Ohr Elchonon street.” Hamodia wished to stress that they had been forced to publish the announcement against their wishes and therefore added an addendum :’This announcement was placed and worded by the courts,” in a reference to the court decision.

And we wonder why Mashiach does not come?? This is Torah? This is chochma? This is spiritual leadership? This is the education we want to give our children? Shame on Hamodia for taking sides and encouraging machlokes and sinas chinam! What happened to the teachings of emulating Aharon haCohen, oheiv shalom and rodef shalom? It’s Elul! Let’s use this time to decrease our petty differences and increase ahavas Yisrael. Every Jew is precious to Hashem despite our differences. Every person has a different task and different path. That is what we should be teaching our children in Elul.

And the Hamodia considers themselves “The Newspaper of Torah Jewry” Guess what they are “The Newspaper of Gur Jewry” if Reb Shaul could not get coverage because of internal politics they are a Ger newspaper and they should market and sell the paper as such.

We don’t read about Rav Shaul in the English, American Hamodia. You won’t read about good news in the hareidi world in Haaretz, either, or that hareidi lawyers and other professionals, in Israel, actually exist. We need more of them.

I am not part of the politics. However, I am surprised by the lopsided pro R Shaul Alter response here. Does anyone recognize that there might be another side to the coin? Do we really care about Hamodia putting in engagement news? Are you really ready to be part of a machlokes?

I can’t understand for the life of me, why the mainstream kitveshe oilam gave one party such a warm reception, and gave him millions. Who in their right minds would get involved in such an ugly machlokes.

Let’s be clear, the problem is Hebrew Hamodia in Israel. Please don’t confuse with US Hamodia which was never involved in publishing engagemants

What a terrifying violation of freedom of press & of freedom of speech.
Next move shall be to force papers who don’t publish pictures of women to now publish them, and then force newspapers to operate on חול-המועד
This whole episode opens up a horrifying precedence.

So this lawyer needed to see his kid’s name in the paper so he went to court to force the paper to put it in?????

This is a lawyer who is one step away from going to court to force those newspapers to print about illegal and elicit relationships.
