NYC Parking Meter Rates Set to Be Hiked 20% Next Month

NEW YORK (VINnews) — For New York City residents and commuters, the cost of street parking is about to go up. In October, the city will begin increasing parking meter rates by 20%. (The increases will take effect on different dates, depending on location.)

The Transportation Department claims that the increase is designed to lighten congestion and make it easier for drivers to find parking spots through ‘demand-based’ pricing.

However the more cynical perspective is that the city, which is desperate for funding, is trying to generate revenue.

Here are a sample of the new rates:

Midtown & Downtown:

First hour: $5.50 (up from $4.50)
Second hour: $9 (up from $7.50)

Manhattan:

Parking meters for passenger cars in areas south of 96th St. will go up $1 and cost an additional $1.50 for each subsequent hour

North of 96th St., meter fees will rise by varying amounts

East Harlem:

(Increase starts Oct. 16.)

First hour: $3 (up 20% from $2.50)
Second hour: $5 (up 25% from $4)
Total for two hours: $8 (up 23% from $5)

Queens:

(increase starts October 27th)

First hour: $2.50 (up 25% from $2)
Each subsequent hour: $5 (up 25% from $4)
Total for two hours: $7.50 (up 25% from $6)

Brooklyn rates will increase starting November 9 at the same rate as Queens, followed by the Bronx on November 22.

Just keep pushing consumers to internet retailers, almost all of whom are outside of NYC.
FACT: You can’t get a parking ticket on the internet – you don’t even have to “feed the meter”.

Well if you want more parking available in crowded areas, the best thing to do is to raise the price of parking. Overnight there will be more empty parking spots.
