Powerful Advice from Rav Shternbuch Regarding a Year When Rosh Hashanah Falls on Shabbos

Rabbi Moishe Sternbuch take part at a " Prozbul ceremony " in the Ultra orthodox jewish neighborhood of Mea Shearim, Jerusalem on September 8, 2015. The Prozbul was established in the years of the Second Temple of Jerusalem by Hillel the Elder. The writ, issued historically by rabbis, technically changed the status of individual private loans into the public administration, allowing the poor to receive interest-free loans before the Sabbatical year while protecting the investments of the lenders. As reported in B’Chadrei Charedim, the Rav focused on the topic of ‘Rosh Hashanah which falls out on Shabbos’, quoting the Chasam Sofer that in a year such as this, when we do not blow shofar on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, we need the merit of Shabbos to protect Klal Yisrael in place of the shofar.

Rav Shternbuch then cited the startling words of the ‘Aruch L’ner’, who calculated that in Jewish History, the years in which Rosh Hashanah fell on Shabbos were either very good for Klal Israel, such as the year the Chet Haegel was forgiven, the Mishkan was erected, and they entered Eretz Yisrael, or the other way around (chalila), such as the two destructions of the first and second Bais Hamikdash.

The Rav added, “…the Aruch L’ner explained, since in these years there is no shofar and we need the merit of Shabbos in its place…[our judgment] depends on Klal Yisrael. In the years that Shabbos is kept properly, Shabbos is indeed a blessing for the Jews, but if the Jews did not keep Shabbos properly, they did not receive the merit and the Mekatregim (Heavenly prosecutors) were not nullified.”

The Rav added that the year the Chazon Ish passed away, Rosh Hashanah fell out on Shabbos, and his disciples attributed his passing to the fact that…there were no Shofar blasts [on the first day] to neutralize the judgment [from Shamayim].

The Posek Hador concluded by sharing powerful advice to protect us in the coming year. “Therefore, it is appropriate this year, to accept [upon oneself] a Kabbalah on Rosh Hashanah, specifically regarding the honoring of Shabbos, such as establishing a consistent seder to study Hilchos Shabbos throughout the entire year, making Shabbos more holy by learning Torah [on Shabbos], working to inspire others to learn Hilchos Shabbos and become well versed, or similar kabbalos.”

He said this will be beneficial to enable Kedushas Shabbat to protect us from the Kateigor (Heavenly Prosecutor).

We see here in Jerusalem al lot of posters for learning more Sabbath Laws: However, we also remember Rabbis who mentioned specific things, like starting the Sabbath earlier (Rabbi Shimon bar Yohai z’l) keeping the Sabbath until later (Rabbi Ovadyah Yosef z’l) and not engaging in idle chatter (Ba’al HaTanya z’l.) Hope the soft approach of Rabbi Shturnbuch shlit”a will prove to be more effective.

Someone please explain . We don’t blow because we were enjoined by chazal who apparently received this halacha thru mesorah. We ‘re actually following a Shabbos halacha . So what’s the issue ? Sure – we always have to be strict on any Shabbos.

Chazal were Gozer not to blow shofar on Shabbos. By not blowing we have the Zechus of adhering to Divra Chachomim which should offset any untoward effect of not hearing shofar on Yom Rishon of Rosh Hashana! Thus, I don’t buy the idea that it portends a bad year. I don’t even believe that any Gadol ever proffered that idea. If people report they did, those people didn’t listen carefully and misconstrued the words of the Gedolim.
