Dolev and Odaya used to escape from Sderot, a town just a few miles from the Gaza border, whenever there were rockets. They had a suitcase ready for such eventualities and on the morning of Simchat Torah they took their girls and sped towards the entrance to Sderot.

Video clips from surveillance cameras show how they met tens of terrorists arriving in the city. Dolev ran with one daughter while Odaya took the other one. The terrorists shot and severely wounded Dolev (he later died of his wounds), and Lia ran to her mother for protection, but she had hidden in the trees nearby.

A  Bedouin named Amar, seeing the plight of Odaya, offered to evacuate her from the danger zone. He thought that the safest place to take her would be the Sderot police station. Little did he know that this was the terrorists’ objective. Reaching the police station, Amar was fired on by the terrorists and inexplicably stopped the car, at which point he was killed. The terrorists also shot Odaya in cold blood, but the two girls lying on the back floor under a sheet went unnoticed. Petrified, they stayed there until police came. The older one, protecting her sister, said. “I have a baby here. Are you from Israel?”, not trusting the police until she was sure they were there to help.

Under fire, police succeeded in escorting the two girls away from danger. They are now living with their grandmother and aunts, but still recall the horror they went through vividly.

This is one of the saddest videos I’ve seen of what happened on Oct. 7th. Senseless violence—now these 5 children from both families will grow up either without both parents or without their father. Why??? Terrible.
Amer was a hero….
