1000 Jews of Florida was founded half a year ago by Shlomo Danzinger, mayor of Surfside, and Jonathan Kilman, chairman and CEO of Converge Public Strategies, a national public affairs firm. The non-partisan political committee hopes to inspire Florida’s 665,000 Jewish voters to become more engaged, using their collective voice to enact positive change.
“Until now we have mostly been reactive,” Danzinger told VIN News. “We came out reaction to anti-Semitic flyers all over Miami Beach and the projection of swastikas onto buildings, but the idea is to become proactive and to put together a political action committee to support candidates that share our values.”
Acknowledging that Jewish voters may not always agree on every issue, 1000 Jews of Florida plans to focus on issues that have a broad reach, including public safety and security, protecting free markets, supporting cultural institutions and defending the State of Israel.
While anti-Semitic incidents may have sparked the creation of 1000 Jews of Florida, the October 7th terror attacks made clear the need for Jews to throw their support behind candidates who share their vision. The group hopes to attract 1000 members, providing them with the wherewithal to become a formidable force on the political scene.
1000 Jews of Florida held its first fundraiser for Representative David Smith at the Surfside home of Ben Jacobson on November 19th. A significant group of people turned out to show their support for Smith, a former marine, who is up for re-election next fall.
Smith affirmed his strong support for Florida’s Jewish community at the fundraiser and praised 1000 Jews of Florida for stepping up to the political plate.
“I applaud them for putting values first,” said Smith. “This is about doing what’s right for Floridians, public safety being a top priority.”
Kilman said that the Smith fundraiser was just the first of many events that 1000 Jews of Florida plans to hold in support of candidates who understand the rights and needs of Jewish Americans.
