MOLDOVA (VINnews) — The eight-day festival of Chanukah is currently being celebrated by the Jewish community in Moldova, with a variety of thirty events taking place across the country. In Kishinev and Belts, hundreds of Jews participated in the menorah lighting and festive meal. Additionally, Jews from Bender, Dubsary, and Rivnitza braved the snow to attend the first night of Chanukah at the large menorah in Bender’s center, while hundreds of food boxes are being distributed to the needy during this period.

One of the highlights of the celebrations was the visit of the EU and US delegations to the main Chabad synagogue in Kishinev. The ambassadors, Mr. Kent D. Logdon (US) and Mr. Janice Mazykes (EU), expressed their support and curiosity about the holiday preparations.

They received a warm welcome from Chief Rabbi Rabbi Mendel Axelrod and Rabbi Shmuel Zalmanov, who provided insights into the remarkable work of Chabad of Moldova and the rich history of the 135-year-old synagogue.

The ambassadors observed the first candle lighting and were briefed on its significance, sending their best wishes to the global Jewish community, and commending the impressive work of Chabad of Moldova. Notably, the community was established 34 years ago by Rabbi Zalman Abelsky ob”m and is currently led by his son, Rabbi Zushe Abelsky, alongside six other Chabad Shluchim residing in Moldova.

Why does it refer to the late Rebbe of the Chabad as מלך המשיח on the paroches? What is with the yarmulkas calling him Moshiach?
