JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Unfortunately there are many sad, heartrending funerals taking place in Israel on a daily basis in the last three months, as Israel’s war with the brutal Hamas terrorists brings more and more fatalities. However an unusual levaya took place this week for Yehonatan Luber HyD, a 24-year-old chasidic idealist from the village of Yitzhar in Samaria, who fell in battle in the Gaza strip.

Yehonatan’s death is the third tragedy to strike the family in the past year, after his cousins Hallel and Yagel Yaniv Hyd were gunned down in a terrorist attack in Huwara just ten months ago. Despite this, Rabbi Shmuel Yaniv, the grandfather of the three slain cousins, sought to strengthen the spirits of the mourners and to make the levaya an expression of faith, inspiration and belief in Hashem.

At the levaya attended by thousands in Jerusalem [including the Kapitchnitzer Rebbe of Israel], Rabbi Yaniv sang Asher Bachar Banu with gusto and urged the crowd to sing with him. In a poignant recollection of Yehonatan’s life [he was the father of a young son and his widow is expecting another child], musicians played chasidic tunes from his chupah a few years ago, as well as other moving tunes from the Rosh Hashana liturgy.

Rabbi Dudkevitz, the rabbi of Yitzhar, sung together with the crowd in an emotional moment of unity.
