The soldier, Lieutenant Colonel Roi Yohai Yosef Mordechai, was a member of the IDF’s Nahal Brigade. He was promoted posthumously from major to lieutenant colonel.

Mordechai, a 31-year-old resident of Tel Aviv, was the son-in-law of former IDF spokesperson General Yoav (Poli) Mordechai. He adopted the name of his father-in-law who has three daughters and no sons and treated Roi as his son.

Roi was supposed to assume the leadership of the Nahal Brigades 50th battalion, and did not have to be in Gaza but volunteered to be with his brigade.

“The IDF shares the sorrow of the family and will continue to support them,” the IDF said.

During the incident in which Roi was killed another soldier was seriously injured.

The IDF spokesman announced that Hamas in the northern Gaza region has no control over any of Gaza city, although individual terrorists are still conducting guerilla activities in the region. The IDF had removed most of its forces from the region, keeping just two brigades to maintain control and transferring most of its forces to central and southern Gaza.
