JERUSALEM (VINnews) — CNN international diplomatic editor Nic Robertson joined the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to tour tunnels used by Hamas under Khan Younis in southern Gaza. The IDF claims that these tunnels were used to house hostages in extremely difficult conditions underground in Khan Younis. The IDF even succeeded in locating cages used to hold the hostages.

IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari had referred to these tunnels on Wednesday, stating  that “we located a tunnel in Khan Yunis that had hostages in harsh conditions, . We brought in international journalists to show the world the crimes of Hamas against humanity.”

The commander of the 98th division, Dan Goldfus, accompanied Robertson into the tunnels, descending three sets of stairs to a depth of 20 meters underground. Goldfus told the reporter that he had evidence of iron cages used to house the hostages.

Robertson was amazed at the size of the enterprise and said that “You can’t hear anything here going on outside.” He stressed that the IDF is the first army ever to be forced to fight above and below ground in this manner. Robertson also found a toilet as well as a ventilation system and light switches.

The IDF claims that the tunnel is connected to a vast underground system under Khan Younis, which involved millions of shekels of investments. The IDF says it has located more than 300 shafts, many leading to large tunnels. More than 100 tunnels have been destroyed, and many terrorists died in them.
