On one recent occasion, Rabbi Rimon received a question which has probably never been asked in the history of psak for thousands of years. The question concerned the words of the Rambam that when a person is involved in war, he must erase the thought of his wife and children from his mind in order to be able to fight effectively.

A couple had been undergoing fertility treatments for some time after being childless for some years. The woman’s husband was fighting in Gaza and she was only able to talk to him for ten minutes every few days.

The woman found out that Baruch Hashem the treatment had been successful and she was pregnant. She now asked whether she should share the news with her husband. Would this weaken his fighting resolve or strengthen it? The Rambam says that he should not think of his wife or children…….

Rabbi Rimon asked her whether the information would weaken her husband or strengthen him. She answered that if she were to say it while crying it would weaken him but if she shared the news happily he would be buoyed by the news.

Rabbi Rimon told her to “cry all you want until the phone call…and then speak to her husband with joy.” In this way she could strengthen him and do her part for his success in battle.

I think that that a wife knowing the halachos of war, because it impacts her family, is a fantastic thing.
Kol Hakavod to her and her husband that they work as a unit.
Regardless if thus is Molchemes Rishus or Mitzvah, the days and clarity to seek days Torah and put my ratzon on hold is a wonderful thing.
