An inspirational figure, Salz, originally from Philadelphia, is a running back for the Texas A&M University Aggies. He wears a yarmulka under his helmet and is an orthodox Jew, even though it interferes with his sports aspirations. He sits out games or quarters that take place on Shabbos.

Sam wears the number 39 on his jersey, chosen in honor of the 39 types of Melacha that are forbidden on Shabbos. Salz is believed to be the only Orthodox Jew on an NCAA Division I football team.

Last month, Sam posted a video explaining how he is able to keep kosher while at university.
