NEW YORK – Tech billionaire Elon Musk publicly endorsed Andrew Cuomo in New York City’s mayoral race on Monday, pinning his post to the top of his X account — a move that underscored the significance he placed on the election’s outcome.

“Bear in mind that a vote for Curtis is really a vote for Mumdumi or whatever his name is. VOTE CUOMO!” Musk wrote, referring to GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa and Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani. “Remember to vote tomorrow in New York!”

The endorsement came just one day before polls open, marking Musk’s strongest political statement in the race. Cuomo, running as an independent, faces Mamdani, a progressive state assemblyman, and Sliwa, the Republican nominee.
Musk’s decision to pin the tweet highlighted how seriously he views Mamdani’s candidacy, which he has previously criticized. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO has called Mamdani “the future of the Democratic Party” — a label he clearly does not mean as praise.
The race has drawn attention from several high-profile billionaires who have rallied against Mamdani, including former Mayor Mike Bloomberg, hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, and Airbnb cofounder Joe Gebbia.
Mamdani, a self-described Democratic socialist, has made Musk part of his campaign rhetoric. In a Fox News appearance last month, he accused Cuomo of giving nearly $1 billion in tax breaks to a Musk-affiliated solar venture during his time as governor — a claim referring to a state-subsidized Buffalo factory later acquired by Tesla.
President Donald Trump also weighed in, saying on 60 Minutes that if the choice came down to “a bad Democrat or a communist,” he’d “pick the bad Democrat all the time.”
With Musk’s endorsement now front and center on X, the billionaire’s influence — and Cuomo’s momentum — could prove decisive in Tuesday’s closely watched race.
