SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO — Let that sink in: New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani visited the Centro Islámico del Caribe in San Juan on Friday, where he was met with cheers of “Allahu Akbar” from the congregation.

Mamdani attended Jummah prayers and participated in a food distribution event for the annual Somos Day of Service, helping provide meals to local residents. During the visit, he was joined by prominent Muslim figures, including his attorney Ali Najmi, NYC Council Member Yusef Salaam, Assemblymember Charles Fall, State Senator Robert Jackson, and NYIC Director Murad Awawdeh.
An imam delivering the sermon explicitly mentioned Palestine, stating that any khutbah that does not address the issue is “short, it is not full.” He emphasized, “This is not about being anti-Jewish. This is about people who lost their land, who are oppressed.” The imam continued, urging optimism among the Muslim community, noting the growing global support for Palestinians after 75 years of conflict.
During the event, Mamdani spoke to the crowd, referencing Malcolm X and asserting, “Sitting at the table does not make you a diner. You have to be eating some of what is on that plate.” Attendees described him as “the mayor of the world! Not the mayor of New York, mayor of the world!”
The visit, part of a broader New York political summit in San Juan, drew attention for its highly public pro-Palestinian tone and visible support from influential Muslim leaders. Critics argue the display raises questions about how Mamdani’s affiliations and rhetoric might shape his priorities as he prepares to take office in January.
No official comment was issued by Mamdani’s office regarding the chants or statements made during the visit.

How does a legit Muslim participate in Homos Day? Is this in preparation for Gay Pride month?
