JERUSALEM (VINnews) — IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir on Thursday reiterated the military’s full responsibility for the failures of October 7, 2023, while insisting that a broader, external commission of inquiry is required to reach complete national conclusions, something the Israeli government has resisted for more than two years.

In a letter to senior officers summarizing an internal review conducted by former top commanders, Zamir wrote that while the IDF has investigated itself and taken accountability, “the incident is not its alone, and it would not be appropriate to direct all the attention solely toward it.”

“To reach the truth and full national-level conclusions, an external and objective commission of inquiry must be established, as was done after the Yom Kippur War,” Zamir stated.

The chief of staff emphasized that such a probe must examine, among other issues, “the interface between the political echelon and the military echelon, and the political and security conceptions that preceded the war.”

Zamir stopped short of explicitly demanding a formal state commission of inquiry, the type repeatedly opposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government despite consistent polls showing overwhelming public support for its establishment.
