New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said the attackers were a 50-year-old man, who was killed in a shootout with police at the scene, and his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram, who was seriously wounded and remains in police custody. Authorities said there was no third shooter involved.
Lanyon said the deceased father was a licensed firearm holder who legally possessed six firearms. Police raids carried out over the past 12 hours at homes in Bonnyrigg and Campsie resulted in the seizure of six guns.
“Ballistics and forensic investigation will determine whether those six firearms are the same weapons licensed to that man,” Lanyon said, adding that investigators would continue to examine how the weapons were used in the attack.
The shooting prompted a major emergency response and has been declared a terrorist incident by authorities. Police said the investigation remains ongoing as they work to establish the full timeline, motive and planning behind the attack.
