Morrison, originally from the former Soviet Union, discovered his Jewish identity while living in Sydney, according to Chabad. He later became a longtime resident of Melbourne, where he and his wife settled to provide their daughter, Shaina, with enhanced educational opportunities. Despite living in Melbourne, Morrison remained closely connected to Sydney, where he continued to conduct business.

Community members described Morrison as a successful businessman whose primary goal was charitable giving. He was known for directing much of his earnings to causes important to him, including Chabad of Bondi, which organized the Hanukkah event targeted in the attack.
