The NYPD says it happened around 4:30 p.m. Thursday near 62nd Street on West Drive.
They say the 58-year-old woman suffered head trauma and was taken to NewYork Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center.
Police say she’s from Fairfield, Connecticut. The NY Daily News identified the woman as Jill Tarlov, the wife of a CBS news executive.
The 31-year-old bicyclist remained on the scene. No charges were filed.
Police say he suffered minor injuries to his shoulder and hand and was treated at a hospital and released.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the bicyclist was riding in the park’s bike lane when he struck the woman while swerving to avoid other pedestrians.
It was just a matter of time. I know that bicycles are great, but the mix between bicycles and pedestrians is really dangerous. I almost got hit by bicycles many times, these guys go really fast and its very scary.
These bicylists go zooming by faster than the 25 hour speed limit for cars. TIme to start ticketing bicyclists in Central Park and anywhere else speeding and killing people! Nebech, on this poor woman.
They do not follow the rules of the road/ Some of them zig zag and drive from the road to the sidewalk. I was walking on the sidewalk and did not expect to nearly be run over by this thing that was on the road 2 minutes before!! I was just “lucky”. Where are the cops when you need them? He was gone in the wink of an eye!! I could have been hurt and he would have been GONE!! They have more rights than we do!! Just so long as we pay our taxes!!
Are pedestrians allowed to walk in the bike lane? That seems to defeat the purpose of having one.

Not according to the NY Post.
Bloomberg just killed another one— the bicycle riders are very arrogant since he made NYC bike friendly!!!
So sad, prayers for your cousin.. Bicyclists need to be registered and carry liability insurance. this way they will be a little more careful as they realize they are responsible for their actions. otherwise they have a free for all. I must say that at least this cyclist did not ride off which many have done after hitting pedestrians.
