A high-tech, one-of-a-kind system of revolving bronze barricades began twirling on Broad and Beaver streets in lower Manhattan this weekend, replacing the series of wooden police barricades and idling, fume-spewing dump trucks that blocked the intersection and protected the exchange since 9/11.
The spinning structure uses the same technology found at revolving restaurants and on Broadway stages to spin 3-foot-tall, bronze blockades into various positions to allow emergency vehicles through or stop traffic.
“The turntable at the New York Stock Exchange is an innovative tool that will make this iconic space appealing and attractive for new businesses, residents and visitors while maintaining the highest levels of security,” said Deputy Mayor Robert Lieber, whose office spearheaded the project.
Because the area around the exchange – only open to pedestrians and emergency vehicles – has a shallow subway system and utilities, traditional heavy bollards were not an option. The turntable system designed by Rogers Marvel Architects fastens the barriers – known as “pin sleeves” – to a circular metal platform embedded in the ground and paved over with cobblestones.
The platform moves to the open or closed position at the direction of a guard.
The month-long installation comes after a year of utility upgrades and improvements in sidewalk and bench space, all funded with $4.4 million in federal grants obtained from the Lower Manhattan Development Corp.
Bloomberg seems to have his priorties right in these hard times. More proof its time for him to leave.
Too bad we didn’t have these barricades before some nuts flew planes into the World Trade Center. They sure would have done a lot to protect us!
Or before someone drove a truck bomb into the world trade center. If an attacked happened and these revolving barricades weren’t there #1 would be the first to jump on blooomberg
