Sorrow fell heavily on Plainridge Racecourse on Monday as word spread of the death Sunday night (June 17) from a truck crash, of veteran harness driver-trainer David Marshall, who was a regular among the Plainridge horsemen.
Just 62, Mr. Marshall was enroute Sunday night to Monticello, N.Y. when a highway crash is said to have claimed his life. Details as to just where the accident occurred were not available.
Prior to Monday’s first post, a contingent of some 100 horsemen, track officials and staff gathered near the infield toteboard to pay hommage to their fallen comrade.
Oddly, Mr. Marshall was scheduled to drive in severeal races on the June 18th program.
John DeFiore, head of mutuals made the announcement to the crowd of the tragedy and moments of slience and prayer followed.
Gary Piontkowski, the tracks COO,had this to say:
“I’ve known him for 25 years and I never saw him without a smile on his face. He would do anything for you. I’ll miss him a lot. A sweetheart of a guy. He always made me laugh.”
Race Secretary Paul Verrette said Mr. Marshall, who comes from a racing family from Mapleville, R.I. had eight or nine horss stabled at Plainridge:
“Dave was an all-round good guy. Easy going.”
Funeral arrangements were not available but Mr.Marshall’s death diminishes us all.
