Under current law, splitting couples who want to stay clear of the blame game in a courthouse must wait a year for a divorce after inking a separation agreement.
That waiting period would be cut to just three months under the bill written by Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein (D-Brooklyn) and state Sen. John DeFrancisco (R-Syracuse) – who each lead their chamber’s Judiciary Committee.
Weinstein and DeFrancisco say, that too many couples are currently tempted to cook up damning allegations against their estranged spouse to accelerate a divorce.
Both said they are optimistic the measure will win full legislative approval this week and be sent to Gov. Spitzer for consideration. [NY Daily News]
